This piece is what got me thinking, many years ago, and then I read someplace that Lucas gave him a scratch temp score from existing music to work from. I'd kill to know the lineup on that scratch score.

His swing piece from 1941 (dance music) tipped me off, too, since it's a poor takeoff of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. I was playing big band music regularly at the time, and that arrangement just really blew chunks.

Randy Newman writes good scores. Bill Conti's score for The Right Stuff was awesome, as was Silvestri's score for Back to the Future (coming to DVD in December!).

Many of the Soundtracks that I enjoy have been mentioned here already, except for a biggie (for me).

The soundtrack to The Shawshank Redemption. It's such an amazing score and has been reused in so many other things (movie, tv, etc).

Thomas Newman did an incredible job with the score for this film.

Also, for a newbie, the soundtrack for Punch Drunk Love is cool.

I'm listening to Blade Runner bootleg right now.

There was always something about this soundtrack that I associated with the New York skyline.

We watched Life or Something Like It tonight, and that soundtrack was really great.

too bad the movie was aweful. I kept picturing the actors in the movie asking themselves "what am I doing here?"

What about The Last Emperor score by Ryuichi Sakamoto? In fact, I like a lot of Sakamoto's scores...The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha...

Well I saw some Gladiator bashing up above somewhere but I think I have to go with that too. I enjoy that film a ton.

Just been listening to some stuff from The Matrix again and it reminded me how much I liked it - both the original score by Don Davis and and the regular soundtrack CD.

I really like Enio Morricone and Sakamoto as well. They are really tremendous. I don't care much for John Williams. They go fairly well with movies, but on their own I find them endlessly uninspiring. I like Danny Elfman better, but again, I wouldn't listen to his scores on their own, I only enjoy them with the film.

Someone mentioned the LOTR score. Maybe i'm just colored by the horrifically bad musical direction in that film, but the music is probably the reason I won't buy that movie. I haven't listened to just the score, but the use of it during the film is so completely and overwhelming horrid that it pains me. There isn't a single second of quiet in that entire film, and the number of "cues from the fifth balcony" type swells during close up of actors' faces is just numbing. I'd have to sit and hear the score by itself to make up my mind on it independently, but the musical direction is my number one complaint about LOTR. [/rant]

I think the original music for Truman Show was some of the best i've heard in a very long time.

"Wings of Desire" (or De Himmel ber Berlin) from the 1987 film by Wim Wenders and Peter Handke. Even though Handke seems to have proved himself a bit of a fascist the meld of msic and prose is lovely.

p.s. please dont mention soundtracks with pop songs for example.. scores only

I just got the score to Spiderman. Not one of Elfman's best, but definitely worth listening to.
