What announcement?
They're going to let Emagic go and let Logic become a professional tool (instead of a geek toy) once again?

Maybe in 5 minutes? 10 AM sounds OK.

Or I can just wait for the "OMG!! APPLE STORE DOWN!!!" thread.

There are supposedly some live-coverage links here. However, I can't seem to get the iPodLounge one to load. Looks like they might be getting hit with too much traffic.

Motorola press release:

Motorola and Apple today announced the availability of the world's first mobile phone with iTunes, enabling music lovers to transfer up to 100 of their favorite songs from the iTunes jukebox on their Mac or PC to their mobile phone.
The new Motorola ROKR (pronounced "Rocker") is available in the following markets:
- U.S. - today, exclusively with Cingular
- U.K. - expected to be available first with Carphone Warehouse in mid-September and with O2, Orange, Virgin Mobile, BT Mobile and other top retailers by late September
The Motorola ROKR features a color display for viewing album art, dual built-in stereo speakers and stereo headphones that also serve as a mobile headset with microphone. Music fans can randomly autofill or manually fill the mobile phone with playlists of their favorite music, audiobooks and Podcasts from their iTunes library via a USB connection. The Motorola ROKR pauses music automatically when users take a call and offers the ability to listen to music while checking messages or snapping a photo

Apple Special Event Live Update

By Peter Cohen [email protected]

Last week Apple sent press and VIPs invitations to a special event at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif. Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage this morning to welcome attendees.

"Thank you all for coming and welcome to our music event today," Jobs said. "Apple's leading the digital music revolution, but at its core, it's all about the music. I just want to recognize a good friend of mine and incredible musician in the audience today, 16-time grammy award winner, the incomparable Yo Yo Ma."

Jobs told the crowd that Apple has sold more than half a billion songs through its iTunes Music Store to date. "We are selling songs at a rate of 1.8 million songs per day," he explained. "iTunes has an 82 percent market share here in the US."

Jobs reiterated an Apple press release offered earlier today that it has 80 percent of the legitimate online music download market in the UK, and said that iTunes is doing "extremely well around the world." There are iTunes Music Stores in 20 countries, he said, representing 85 percent of the global music market.
85% of the GLOBAL online music market? Holy cow.

iTunes 5

Jobs then rolled out iTunes 5, an update to the popular software Apple makes available for Mac and Windows users alike. He described the new version's interface as sporting "a little bit of a refined look."

Users can now organize playlists into folders, and new search capabilities have been added. Windows users can now automatically synchronize contact and calendar information using iTunes 5 and Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express software.

Great, the ROKR is only Cingular... no Cingular in Montana. No iTunes phone for me. Not that I care, I have a shuffle and a first gen iPod.

Can someone here keep a play by play of posted updates from the event? Endgadget and iLounge are taking a pretty bad hit.

iTunes Phone - Motorola ROKR

Jobs also used today's event to unveil the first iTunes-compatible cell phone, the Motorola ROKR. "You've probably heard about this," Jobs said, a reference to the speculation that has run rampant prior to today's event.

The phone will automatically pause when you get a call, explained Jobs. Songs are transferred through a USB cable.

The ROKR can only hold about 100 songs, according to Jobs. "The way we think of this phone is, it's really an iPod shuffle on your phone," he explained. Both devices can shuffle, both can autofill, neither has a click wheel -- but the phone has a display.

ROKR pricing anyone?

Wonder if you can get it unlocked and stick your T-Mobile SIM card in it?

It's a quad-band phone, so it will work with T-Mobile or other GSM providers as well. Just put in your SIM card.

The question is if it's going to be available w/o a Cingular plan. It might be a bundle deal only...

Usually it's only locked if you get it subsidized when buying with a new plan...

I believe the phone is Cingular-only in the US, so I assume it's locked.

Madonna and other musicians are also being tapped to shill the new ROKR in an advertising campaign set to begin later this week, showing them in a phone booth out in the desert.

"A great phone with an iTunes client is half the story," said Jobs. "What we're adding to that is the number one wireless carrier in North America. Cingular will be the exclusive provider of this phone in North America." Jobs then introduced Ralph de la Vega, Cingular's Chief Operating Officer.

"We have a vision, working with Apple and Motorola, about convergence between entertainment, computers, and communications, coming together and forming a real product," said de la Vega. "There have been a lot of rumors about this product, but today, the talk ends and the music begins. You're going to get your songs on your phone, anywhere you want them, any time you want them, with the world's best music service, brought to you by Motorola and Cingular."

Meh. I was hoping for a phone designed by Apple, not just a gadget that uses Apple's interface and technology. Not that I'm really complaining, but since I'm not in the market for a new phone anyway, I was hoping for something to excite me on a conceptual level.

What would have actually excited me was an iPod with a larger HD, as that's something I would buy today.
It's the devil's way now.

The Nano is freakin' sweet. The ROKR is incredibly disappointing. It's just an e398 with a Java app, and the e398 has been out for over a year now.

The Nano is sweet. I feel like a dufus paying $99 for a shuffle about 3 months ago. I would much rather have a flash based Nano for with a color screen and 4 times the memory for twice as much.

No more iPod mini... I guess mine is now a collector's item.

I am lamenting what appears to be the lack of firewire on the iPod nano.
Apparently, Apple chose to skip "iPod micro" and go for broke.

The should have stuck with the iPod Mini name and made this the gen 3 iPod Mini. It's going to get confusing. Nano sounds kinda dumb.

Who cares though, I so want a black Nano. Now.
