Just called Apple. Tentative shipping date is the 26th.

Then again, that's coming from a representative that said that Apple hasn't shipped any iBooks yet, so I don't know how accurate that's going to be...

Ordered non-BTO CD-RW on 5/1.....still "being assembled"...every time i speak to an apple rep the ship dates move back...now it is early June "tentatively"...the Apple reps also categorically deny that a single iBook of any sort has shipped (we know better).

I have a very very bad feeling that "early June" will end up being late June or early July. I just got thru with the 733mhz debacle and now this...when will I learn? When will Apple learn?

I am not defending apple but, we all have to understand that Apple has to do business this way. Leaving us all hanging and waiting for our iBooks. The reason has to do with profit margins being so thin and, had Apple introduced a product that would not have such demand it could really hurt them. Remember the cube. Too many in inventory added to a serious loss with regard to share values. So, we wait. Basically we could say that come next quarters report, Apple is going to be sitting pretty. With luck, we might have our books by then.

As for me I am waiting for two of them:
64/10/CD and a 128/10/CDRW ordered 5/2/01

Mine shipped this morning which is sweet. I ordered it on 7th May.

It is really odd, as i placed my order _after_ some of you here, and it shipped before. AND it was from the UK AppleStore for Education.

Stock DVD model.

I'm shocked, stunned and, well, shocked...

I ordered an ibook on 12 April [almost a month ago, now] via the Apple Store Uk website...when the new iBook was announced, they altered my order accordingly. The order doesn't show up on the Apple Store Uk website - they cancelled the original order I made because I'm paying by Apple Loan, and gave me a new order number...which doesn't show up on the website
-Now, Apple Store phoned me up about a week after I'd ordered to check on the status of my loan application, for the purposes, they said, of updating the website. Maybe they'll get round to it eventually...
I phoned the Apple Store up. The very nice Swedish lady on the other end was, well, very nice, but she couldn't tell me much.

Sorry to gripe

So;
I ordered a DVD iBook w/ 20gb. I don't know what the order status is.
Still, it's encouraging to know that someone in the UK's getting theirs...

Stephen W, very sorry to hear about your AppleStore Problems. I have had them in the past, but they do sometimes come though!
(By the way, you don't happen to teach at the University of Edinburgh, do you?! just a lecturer is called a Stephen W...)

I would also add that the ScotSys in Edinburgh have got an iBook too, which is pretty amazing.

I'm not really happy with the whole Applestore thing... all I ordered was the AV cable, (on the 2nd) since I plan on getting my DVD Combo iBook at CompUSA when they're shipped.

It's been more than 10 days and the order is still at stage 2. (I know my card is ok... and the phone rep can't explain the delay; they are in stock)

Sure, the cable won't do me any good yet, but come on, how long should a cable take to order and ship?

I ordered an iBook DVD/CD-RW combo/20gb on May 1, then on May 3 I switched the order to DVD/20gb after I found out the combo drive was only 4X.

It went from "Being reviewed" to "Being assembled" on May 2, then it went back to "being reviewed" on May 3, then back to "Being assembled" later on May 3 after I changed the order. I have received a copy of the order by snail mail, but my card has only been authorized, not charged.

I ordered an extra battery seperately on May 7. It is still at "Being assembled."

I want my iBook!

My order still says "Being Reviewed" so I called Apple and they gave me the usual unhelpful answer of "It will be 3-5 weeks, end of May, early June."

Ordered DVD/256/20 on 1MAY, received the "your item is being processed...will be shipped." message on 10MAY. At this point, 3 weeks would be great, 4 weeks alright, 5 a bummer.

What did you epect them to say? "Oh, let me call over to Taiwan and talk to Chan Li the manager at out plant. He'll go around the factory and check all the ibooks for your order number (since they all look the same). While he's getting yours, he'll check the otgher 32,456 numbers that people have requested the status on. You should get an answqer sometime in the Spring on 2004."

Yes, that's called customer service...
That's called unrealistic.

We're all excited about getting our new iBooks, but expecting someone in who-knows-where (California?) to know where your particular ibook is in the production line in a factory on the other side of the earth is foolish.

Relax, watch some TV, get some fresh air, and if by early June (5 weeks after your order) you don't have an iBook in your hands, THEN call Customer Service. You're just wasting everyone's time when you call to ask stupid questions that they can't answer. It's no wonder the hold times are so long.

Until the 5 weeks are up, keep hitting the refresh button on the Order Status page.

I disagree. I order equipment all the time for my company, and the suppliers I deal with can tell me where order is in the production line and how long I can expect till it is complete (they can go and look it up on their computer, since the factory tracks all of that). Clearly the guy I talked to didn't know or have anyway to find out this info. Because Apple doesn't hook up their sales/phone support to the manuacturing plant. Does Apple do this? Clearly not. Should they, I think so. It's done all the time.

Apple IS telling you where it is in their production line, it's being assembled. And they did let you know when to expect it, 3-5 weeks. Apparently you have a hard time accepting the status and time-frame that you were given.

I think both arguments have a point. While I don't expect Apple to be able to tell me exactly which part is being put in it at the moment I call, I think it's ridiculous how unhelpful the support reps are. I mean, obviously these guys do not know what is going on if they deny that any iBook has shipped. I just wish they would say what they mean and mean what they say. There's a huge difference between 4 days and 5 weeks. I appreciate them getting the iBooks out early, but why do they have to be so difficult about it? They could announce when each model starts shipping, or add another step to the order status page, or SOMETHING...

I know I'm impatient, but consistency, reliability, and good customer relations are important when you're dealing with a huge corporation and $1700 of your own money.

1st - I was responding to your post about that being unrealistic. In which I disagree and gave my reasons for that.
2nd - Apple did not tell me it's being assembled, it's being "reviewed".
3rd - The guy that I called couldn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. I have no problems with the 3-5 quote. However considering Apples past history of on-time delivery of new products, I feel it's necessary to scrutinize that a little closer.

I order my iBook/DVD on 5/1 . . it is has been in the "Being Assembled" state since 5/5 ish I think. I called today and was told it would ship out on either the 17th or 18th at the latest. riiighht . . . I'm not holding my breath.

What sucks is . . I was prefectly willing to wait 3 to 5 weeks for it .. until all these bastards starting having iBooks sent to them . . it seems that a lot of people order them on 5/7 . . and had them shipped by the 9th . . not just on the forum but on many others across the web. Oh well.

I placed my order (iBook DVD) with Outpost on the 2nd, I have been calling in regularly since the web tracking has NO info since I updated my order to the memory bundle. Finally today I got some useful info. They have 5 DVD iBooks coming in tomorrow, he couldn't tell me if I was in the winning five or when the next shipment was scheduled. He did tell me to call in tomorrow if I didn't get an email with a tracking # and he could probably tell me when the next batch would be coming in.

So glad to finally know something, I am travelling on Friday and the new iBook would be the ideal companion!
