One hell of an anticlimax.

I really thought Apple would come up with a better name.

Oh well.

You guys made your own hype. All Apple did was send out a plane white paper with an invite less then a week ago.

And call it "ground-breaking," and a "breakthrough digital device." Seems like neither one, to me.

It's not Apple fans' fault this is a disappointment.

Hmm. Seems like it's just a souped up MP3 player. MacCentral has live coverage of the event.

You find me a 5 gig Firewire hard drive the size of a deck of cards that acts as a walkman with a 10 hour battery.

Wake up.

I may have taken half the product at half the price but $400 is out of my range. Hey Jobs? We didn't all get super rich off of Toy Story.

I dunno man I mean 4 bills for what is basically a sony walkman I mean common

I guess the die-hard Apple fanatics will be creaming thier jeans over anything with an Apple logo on it though

This is kinda rediculous to me. How about a mid range G4 for those of us that can't shell out 17 bills ($1,700.00).

Bring back the Cube or something better than it for chrissakes

I'm about this far >.< from going X86 box running Win 2k. Well not really, but this thing is just ludicrous.

Doesn't matter. I'm not dropping $300 either. For $150 I'll put up with having to shulle songs on a smaller MB mp3 player.

As far as mp3 players go- how's the price stand up? Will mp3 people buy it at that price?

I see it goes with iTunes, does that mean only Mac people can use it-to synch with, mp3 transfer, etc? (don't know if there is a pc version of itunes)

If mac only, maybe these little devices will make the mac experience that more appealling?

Ok, so it seems to be cool, mp3 player that sync to iTunes... With an internal 5GB hard drive.

But why 399$???

Say hello to iPod...
Say goodbuy to Apple...

It seems to me that they didn't learn from the Cube. STOP OVERPRICING YOUR NEW PRODUCTS!!!

They'll do the same thing as for the Cube, bring it down in price a lot... Butm by then the hype for it will be gone.

I was planning on buying this... but FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS?! what the fsck.

lol ok, ok It might be an ok price, BUT thats as long as its not aimed at the people who actually use MP3s... I mean peeps use MP3s CUZ THEY DONT WANNA SHELL OUT THE MONEY for CDs! OMG, duh Apple.

But iTunes 2 with an EQ is cool! Thanks for that, at least.

But why 399$???
Because it's Apple. They have a tendancy to throw random mark-ups on their products.

"Costs $199 for us to make it? Other people sell the same thing for $200? Sell it for $10,000! Everyone will buy one!"

For that price it could easily include 16 MB of it's 5 GB for a Palm OS organizer function, EASILY. The screen is there already. Also, it needs a body style that allows it to stand by and plug in - with Stereo - to your home system, along with a remote (Apple could make one beautiful), so you can make PRACTICAL USE of it. I've got a decent system where I send my music wirelessly from my G4 to my stereo, but this is very uncommon. Something like this would be a great alternative.

Oh, and a correction: t doesn't come with a power cord because it doesn't need one - it powers up from the Firewire.
Grrr...rawr.

$399 = 280.181 + VAT it will come out at about 299
That is more expensive than the Panasonic SV-SD05 MP3 Player (the previously most expensive @ 247) it may not be firewire or have as much storage but that looks more like revolutionary and it comes from a co with a history in Audio products. Another Apple product that will A. bite the the dust in about 12 months B. come down in price till normal people can even think about getting one, by which time everybody will have moved on.
Another cube? you bet.

If you think that $399 is a lot for an mp3 player/hard drive please check out this link...this is where you can find the drive itself for $399.

No one is saying that price/specs suck. I think we all agree that for those spec's and that price it's kinda nice. Problem is we don't want to spend that much. I just don't want to drop $400 on an mp3 player.

Firewire might be faster, but it also reduces the potential market for iPod by a factor of 100.

Recharging through the firewire is pretty cool, but it's also convenient to be able to drop a couple of AA batteries into your Nomad when you're in the middle of nowhere. I take a CD player backpacking all the time, no outlets or firewire ports.........

Nomad also supports surround sound. You can plug front and rear speakers into it. Not a feature I need in an mp3 player, but at least it pushes the envelope.

The iPod just seems like another "member's only jacket" product to fleece the already overpaying Mac faithful.

I'd take it all back if iPod had a way of plugging into a home stereo and supported surround sound or they could have even put some PDA apps on it or figured a way of getting your iTunes visualization plug-ins to run on it!

Now THAT would be 'breakthrough'.....

then look at the toshiba again, then compare the size and weight of the two... The toshiba drive (which I'm willing to bet is inside the ipod, is a lot smaller and lighter. You get what you are willing to pay for.

That's the LaCie drive for those of you who haven't seen it. Pretty damn cool.

Interestingly enough, the Toshiba site says it's a Type II PC card. That means you can plug it into a laptop or even some PDA's like the iPaq.

Now THAT's 'breakthrough'.......

I pulled it out of my ass.

iPod market =(mp3 player market) - (don't own a Mac) - (don't have built-in firewire)

From that very small market you will get what kind of sales rate? 20%? 30%?

The really subjective number is the (mp3 market) to begin with. Let's not forget what the Recording Industry, Microsoft, AOL/TIME WARNER, RealNetworks and lots of other industry kingpins are trying to do to the mp3 format.

I hope the profit margin on iPod is as big as it seems to be because we're talking about a pretty limited number of sales in terms of global markets and PC peripherals.
