I have been saving up for a while and have a sizeable down payment. Please recommend or suggest a place to live in the lower 48 states that meet the following requirements:
1) Less than $900,000
2) Generally good weather (no major snowstorms, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, not raining often)
3) Within 1.5 hours drive of a major city located on either East Coast or West Coast (no inland cities)
4) Single family house
5) Preferably no generic type of house (not a deal-breaker, but just preferred). I like Craftsman style, but not limited thereto.
6) No split-level type houses, single story preferred
7) No rural areas. Suburbia is ok.
Some ideas of mine:
1) Pasadena, CA
2) Portland, OR
I am open to moving anywhere, as my job is not limited by location.

Portland or San Diego (the latter gets extra points for its amazing weather/climate, and being within driving distance of LA and Vegas)

I think Irvine is one of the nicest communities around minus the fact that most of the city is HOA and mostly "generic type." Those are the two things you might get away from in San Diego and Pasadena.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have heard about San Diego and its nice weather. I'm worried about the numerous vagrants that I saw on the streets last time I visited there.
Irvine is nice, but seems too fakey to me. Lived there for a number of years also.
Keep the suggestions coming.

That would have been a certain part of downtown. Outside of there, San Diego doesn't really have a vagrant problem.
Have you ever seen Carlsbad? That's a nice community. Not sure what you will find under 900k there, but not really sure what's under 900k in Pasadena either.

Too bad about the coastal requirement. Austin, Texas is amazing (and no state tax).

The Portland of the South, in a sense.

Between the snow in the north, and the hurricanes in the south, not much for you on the east coast. Unless maybe somewhere in the Carolinas, which I have no idea if that's nice or not.
Suburb of Seattle? Oh wait, rain.
San Jose is also nice. I'd live there, assuming I could ever afford it.

Would you exclude all of Florida because of hurricanes?

The west coast will of course fall into the sea at some point. Worth keeping in mind.

We really need a mic drop smiley.
The Carolinas are nice, but they also get the occasional hurricane blow through. How about the Seattle area? Of course, the west coast has that nasty earthquake issue.

Coastal Georgia is nice, if a little too humid in summer. Savannah is quite an experience, neat town.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm considering Portland a bit more now. And yes, no Florida because of the hurricanes and flooding.
I'm looking into San Diego and Carlsbad also. The Carolinas do seem to be nice. I'll keep into consideration.

Given your "liberalness", definitely San Diego or Portland.

I really enjoyed Portland. Not by the ocean but a short drive away. Not cheap but out outrageous either. I'm an outdoorsy activities person so it's really my dream destination - given that Vancouver is unaffordable. If only.

You'll wind up in Portland. I'm almost willing to put money on it.

Most of Florida sucks, but Destin is pretty awesome. Emphasis on pretty.
Down side: bull sharks.
