A sheriff's badge does not always have 6 points, and one wonders if law enforcement made the change after WWII on purpose to avoid the comparison. Regardless, knowing the source (how weird is that place) there's no point in trump trying to defend the "art". If his camp had made it they could claim some intent.

1) Have I ever said stuff in private, in the heat of the moment, which I wish I hadn't said? Sure. I think everybody has. Believe me.
2) I think you'll find if you look into it, Machado turns out not always to be the easiest person to deal with, but hey... you know what? Neither am I.
3) Since Hillary thinks we should be discussing things said to women back in the 90's, I've got this little list here of things she's said to women who accused her husband of sexual assault. Let's see how much of a friend to women she really is.

I can actually sympathize with that. I know how the industry works, and I have myself been party to (privately discussed) decisions of "this woman weighs too much to fit the character". I'm not proud of it, but I know what side of the toast the butter's on.
So, there are ways this can be defended. "She's a horrible human being" is not one of those ways

Hence mentioning those things make for a poor defense of his own behavior, because what he's being accused of is calling her fat.
A better defense would be the one you mentioned above. She entered a beauty pageant. This is the last place to be arguing superficial concerns lack merit. He took a "no bullshit" approach, in private, to the most pivotal employee of his operation.
Instead, he opts for character assassination... to the accusation he calls people names.
