Okay guys, I'll be updating this thread with daily tips on how to prevent forest fires, as well as some interesting forest fire facts.

Today's entry:

You can help prevent forest fires by leaving your flammable liquids such as gasoline at home. If you wish to drive a vehicle through a forest, an electric vehicle is best, but if you do not have an electric vehicle make sure that your vehicle does not have any gas leaks. Gasoline is not only flammable and dangerous, but it is also poisonous to the woodland creatures that live in the forest, so just say "no" to bringing liquids such as gasoline into the forest.

I wouldn't go sitting down in the woods if I were you. Could start a fire.

How can we prevent the fire, heck we didn't start the fire. In fact, the fire has always been burning since the world's been turning.

We can prevent the fire by saying no to flammable liquids in the forest such as gasoline. To review: when somebody says "hey andi*pandi let's go into that forest and bring a gallon of gas with us, we'll have fun!" your proper response is "no! I will go into the forest with you, but not with that gallon of gasoline, gasoline is not for forests".

Here's a real victim of forest fire. He went extinct in the wild in 2011. He was actually highly adapted to his habitat; but in a state where every jack ass and his brother's dog wants to be a rancher cowboy redneck, they have cut down most the forest except for a few patches of a few square miles each (mostly parks). Now one good fire this summer (probably started by global warming and a chain smoker none the less) has wiped out the species in those areas. Meanwhile the ranchers have never really made any money. For one, they don't really know how to ranch or farm, the market is over-saturated, so they just spend their lives living off government subsidies.

Aww Isn't he cute!

So besson on another note, what if someone asked you to go into the forest with a cigarette? What would you do if you saw someone throw a cigarette out the window of their car?

Forest fire fact of the day:

Did you know that the leading cause of forest fires is cigarettes?

If you are a smoker, don't take your cigarettes into the forest with you. Not only are they a fire hazard, but the woodland creatures to not appreciate your second hand smoke. If you have to smoke, put out your cigarettes in your car's ashtray, and if your car is gas powered do not take it into the woods with you. The minimal safe distance your gas powered car should be from the forest is 5 miles. If you are not accessing the forest via car, a minimal safe distance is 6 miles, since your cigarettes can be blown to the forest by strong winds.

Say no to cigarettes in the forest.

Isn't it usually raining when lightning strikes? Usually raining hard? How does mud catch on fire? And doesn't lightning usually pass through trees? hmmm

Lightning - Wildfire Management Branch - Ministry of Forests and Range - Province of British Columbia

Lightning can strike almost anywhere (up to 15 kilometres from a storm cell) so may not be affected by rain. Dry lightning can also occur and is a potent ignition source because there is not enough moisture with the storm to interfere with ignition or fire spread.
And when the ground has been dried out for months in the Summer even heavy rain isn't enough to prevent a fire from a lightening strike from starting. It takes up to a week of heavy rain to reduce the risk.

I live in province that gets between 650 to 1200 forest fires a year.

Lightning IS far more common a cause of wild fires than cigarettes. It has been the only cause for far more time than cigarettes have existed. Negligent smokers are far less of a threat nowadays than a bunch of other activities, such as parking a car on dry grass (catalytic converters are HOT and stay that way for a long time, and can ignite grass pretty easily). Recent fires in the US have been caused by bad campfire management and arson, but none has been tied to negligent cigarette disposal. On the other hand, the Bastrop Fire, the worst wild fire ever in Texas, appears to have been caused by trees contacting power lines.

I don't think Big Tobacco at its most powerful would have tried to take on Smokey.

Speaking of cigs, I've felt a mixed messege regarding the latest campaign of "Get your Smokey on" especially with the afore mention use as a catalyst for the topic at hand (but minor to lightning strikes).

What, me worry?

I wonder how they know this. I bet what really happened is they traced the fires origin to where power lines met forest; which clearly means a power line repair man must have been there and dropped a cig while working. Perhaps he was cutting away the interfering branches at the time.

High winds, dry trees, wind-driven fire...it was apparently fairly easy to trace back to a source.

While bonfires and beanies and weenies might sound very romantic, there is nothing romantic about forest fires caused by runaway bonfires, which accounts for 47% of all forest fires.

Unless there is a certified park ranger nearby to assist you, do not make your own bonfires in a forest, and it never hurts to ask that the park ranger show you his or her certifications either.

You're a hard guy to figure out.

At times you seem like the churchy socially conservative type, at others (like this) you seem more socially liberal. Do you enjoy throwing us off, or do you have an alter ego?

I ask, in part because you might be Abe. Abe was really good with these psychological games. Are you Abe, and if not, do you have any Abe information?

Good luck finding your perfect sex party, this sounds like great fun!

Hey guys, sorry I've been neglecting this thread.

Here's today's forest fire prevention tip:

Do not bring your magnifying glasses into the forest on a sunny day, because in a spot where your magnifying glass is exposed to direct sunlight it can burn brush lying on the ground, causing a fire.

It depends in what part of the world. The leading natural cause for wildfires varies between lightening, volcanoes, and rock slides.

The leading cause of preventable wildfires in the U.S. is from cigarettes. In China it's coal fires.

You can use Photoshop on a portable device, providing it hasn't been doused in or exposed to a flammable liquid such as gasoline (such as when you gas up your car and use your laptop without washing your hands), but desktops are a no no since they require electricity and some sort of power generator. Squirrels can chew on these wires and expose them to nearby brush.

Not funny.

More like more room for your big ass, and your face

If you don't respect forests at least respect the woodland creatures living in them.
