can someone help me, it seems some application is always using my soundcard, even when i reboot or shutdown. I can hear sound in reaplayer, vlc player or quicktime but sometimes i get the message that an application is using my soundcard, now i cant hear any streaming audio off the web.

i have removed all applications from the dock(by quitting them) and it doesnt solve anything.

What's happening is that an application is changing the audio output setting on you (probably either Real or VLC - it happened to me once after using a VLC beta). Here's how to set it back and get sound working again:

1) Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
2) Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
3) Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

Done..

No kidding. I've used PithHelmet to block myspace's music player, but QuickTime (which thanks to Flip4Mac also encompasses Windows Media files) is exempt from PithHelmet's URL-based blocking, so tons of junk still gets through. If I plan to browse myspace, I actually use PithHelmet to block all plugins.

As TETENAL said, simply launch GarageBand. This has always cleared up this problem for me. Launch GarageBand. Close it. Problem solved.

worked like a charm, sound is back.
Still says output is not supported though in the box in utilities for audio.
Is that normal. or now just live with it?

What OS are you running? During 10.4.6, I didn't get any audio over the internet. Since 10.4.7 I have though.
