Is there a way I can get the ping command in OS X to show ICMP ping attempts that fail ? At the moment, i leave ping running when diagnosing a system to show that my connection is still valid. However, in OS X, any pings that fail (ie if the connection goes down) arent displayed. Ping simply shows any responses it recieves.

Is there a switch or somethig I can use to make ping behave more like it does in Windows and linux where it will RESPONSE RECIEVED, or RESPONSE FAILED etc rather than only RESPONSE RECIEVED ?

If you abort the ping command with ctrl-c, the number of packets that have been transmitted and received will be displayed.

yes, but im looking for ping to show failed/missing responses as they fail, rather than giving me a total after the fact.

Did you read the man page?

-v Verbose output. ICMP packets other than ECHO_RESPONSE that are
received are listed.
