Time for the conspiracy theory to pass the test. Will gas/crude go down, stay, or go up starting today?

I have heard this conspiracy theory, and thought it was nuts. But to see gas shoot up 16 cents from $2.03 before I went to work to $2.19 when I was finished made me wonder.

It's been going up for the last 2 weeks. OPEC is cutting production. Big deal.

Its funny how the big oil companies mentioned the unrest in the mideast and the cost per barrel for oil but if it was indeed so expensive to buy the oil how can the oil companies like Exxon be making record profits, I mean billions of dollars of profits in a quarter. If the price of gas was indeed tied to the price of oil then they would not be reaping such huge profits.

Now that Democrats are in control of Congress, high gas prices will be seen as a good thing.

chabig is right - at least the Al Gore brand Democrats support artifically high gas prices in order to discourage (punish) owners of internal combustion engines.

Yet another dumb partisan remark. There are many conservatives who are interested in the environment, this is not a partisan issue.

God damn, I am SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SOS SOS SOS ooooo sick of these stupid partisan remarks like this which can neither be substantiated nor rationally justified.

Please cut it out, these remarks serve ABSOLUTELY no productive purpose. None at all.

Well, the new speaker of the house has already said she's interested in cutting all the breaks we give to Big Oil, and instead of letting profits fall, they'll just pass the loss they're taking on to us.
Anyways, the largest travel week is nearly upon us, and gas prices ALWAYS go up this time of year, no exceptions, so expect it to go up, in combination with OPEC cutting production, less benefits to oil cos, and most likely higher taxes on oil, expect gas prices to SOAR in the next year, and there is very little you as a consumer can do about it.

They were $2.17 for regular last time I filled up here, I'd expect the prices to go up, but really only because it's November and prices always go up in the winter.

Do they always go up in the winter? I've seen that statement applied to the winter, the summer, springtime, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Christmas, and Memorial Day. In the last few years, however, it appears that you are correct. The new year ushers in the next large jump in gas prices with disturbing predictability:Chart

There's a guy around here that did the same thing. I think it might even have been a Rabbit as well. I saw a clip about it on the local news a year or so ago. He gets the grease from local restaurants and says it makes his car smell like french fries.

Regular is $1.96 where I get it, though other places did jump to around $2.09 or so after the election. It's all sorts of mid-market nervousness, that's all. And it's stupid, but when speculators manage and control the market what can you do?

I have to (don't throw stuff at me!!!) side a bit with chabig on his assertion that a Democratic Congress will consider higher gas prices good-one Democratic platform plank has been "dependence on foreign oil is bad," and another is "using gasoline pollutes and pollution is bad." They put a lot of other stuff in with those points, but they're both true. It remains to be seen which direction they intend to go with those two ideas. However, unlike most of Europe, I don't think the American public will stand still for punitive taxation of gasoline. Tax credits for sensible gas usage and low emissions are a possibility though.

Gas has gone up a little - I'm in NJ now, and it's same price as I was paying in MD last week, which is usually ten cents more.

Tell me analog, what have I BLAMED CLINTON for?

I would love to know.

The only thing I've said about Clinton was, he talked a lot, but did nothing.
And him "balancing the budget" by cutting military and defense spending rant.

I've never blamed Clinton for say, gas prices, terrorism, 9/11 etc like others have blamed Bush in here.

But if I have, please show me.

No one blames Pres. Bush for higher gas prices or 9/11.

Americans blame Pres. Bush for not doing anything about high gas prices and not reacting immediately when he first heard about the WTC. Just sitting around and continue reading his goat book.

Wrong
Americans blame Pres. Bush for not doing anything about high gas prices
Like? And you mean some Americans.
and not reacting immediately when he first heard about the WTC. Just sitting around and continue reading his goat book.
The 9.11 commission came to the conclusion that nothing Bush could have done would have stopped anything. That he didn't do anything wrong.

But continue to carry that chip as if it has any legitimacy.

Finally somebody else sees this; its not china and the middle east ripping us off it's our own oil companies.

I've seen it for quite some time. Ever since prices would jump because "Iran may get nukes" or "Someone forgot to wear clean underwear" or no reason whatsoever, I knew it had nothing to do with getting oil and was all about getting OUR money.

Everyone who's got the power to rip the consumers off (OPEC, the oil companies, the gas stations, and oil company shareholders), can and will rip the consumers.
