i just downloaded gimp from Gimp.app onto my macbook. then i installed X11 from my tiger dvd, as instructed. i installed gimp, and tried to open it. the gimp and X11 icons appeared on my dock, meaning they were opening.. but then the gimp icon disappeared, and i was left with only X11 open... i rebooted, but the same thing happened. i installed Fink because some people said it helped, but the same thing happened. then i tried to drag an image file into the gimp icon, but it STILL DIDN'T WORK. .... i am very frustrated right now and i don't know what else to do...

any advice??

thank you!!

Have you run software update yet? X11 has seen a few updates since the version you have on the installer discs. Not necessarily the cause of your problem, but it might help to get it up to date.

What does your Console say when you launch these apps? See what is being reported in both Console.log and System.log and report the results back here...

i'll try doing the updates... thanks, JKT and thanks to everyone for the help!!! really appreciate it

and for besson3c i couldn't find my system.log, but i did find the console.log.. it's pretty lengthy, unfortunately. i tried opening it a whole bunch of times, so basically it's the same thing over and over again in my console log. here it is:

Are you on an Intel machine? Are you running the PPC or Intel Gimpshop?

Did you migrate any of your files over from a previous PPC Mac?

From the log, it looks like the first issue to occur on launch is the error message relating to Input Managers. Which do you have installed and does disabling them solve the problem? (You'll need to move them out of the ~/Library/Input Managers (and /Library/Input Managers) folders and restart to do so).

how do i remove the stuff in my input managers folder? i tried putting the items in another folder.. but it just copied them.. sorry about the intense computer-illiteracy..

thanks for the suggestion, though

Could be... You'll need Intel compatible versions of:

- XCode
- Gimp
- Your X11 environment
- All other Unix prereqs (which should be provided by the OS).

IT WORKS NOW!!!!!! thank you so much for the input: besson3c, JKT, and bmcgonag

i think the xcode was the problem!!!!!! i ran a search for Xcode and saw it was a folder, but the folder told me nothing about its version.. so i left it. then, i saw it was mentioned a random help.pdf... so i searched "Xcode" in that pdf and found that it was included in Cocktail. I opened cocktail and then i tried gimpshop! and it works now and i'm using it as i type.

once again, thank you so much for all the input! you really made my day!

I have no idea what Cocktail has to do with the problem, but I'm glad it's working for you!

Do you mean that you ran Cocktail?

I am having terrible X11 woes. I have been trying to use OpenOffice, so I installed X11, and when I try to launch X11, it fails, so I noted the following error when I try to launch from Terminal.app:

XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 3360x1200 @ (-1440,0)
Screen 0 placed at X11 coordinate (0,0).
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
Quitting XDarwin...

I have searched Google High and Low for clues on this- NO LUCK! This post is close to describing what I am experiencing.

Any hints!!!???

You need to launch OpenOffice from the X11 app, not the terminal. Do you get any error messages in your system or console.log relating to X11 when you start it up (check out your Console utility)? Are you running 10.3 or 10.4? Where did you install X11 from?

Are you aware of NeoOffice? If you need to get up and running immediately, I would just install NeoOffice and be done with it.

Sorry, I was not clear. I cannot open X11. If I try to open from finder, it quits; if I try to open from terminal, it gives me the above error. The same error shows up on the console log: Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!

I am actually interested in gnucash, and I thought this would be an easier way to install it.

Thanks for responding.

Fair enough... What about the answers to the other questions I've posed?

Once you get your X11 environment stable, I suggest installing gnucash through MacPorts if there is no binary installer available.

Running latest version of 10.4 and installed x11 from the Tiger install disk, followed by a software update.

Looks like the problem might be a permissions related issue. What are the permissions of /private/tmp set to? When I start my X11 I'm not getting the permissions error you are:

Code:
XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) [DRI] screen 0 installation complete Screen 0 added: 1280x854 @ (0,0) Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
Do you have a .X11-unix directory in /tmp? What are its permissions?

If you don't want to fix this manually, doing a permissions repair might fix this problem.
