I haven't seen one here locally, so I thought I would ask around for anyone who has actually seen/used one.

How loud is the eMac?

Does it have any fans?

Lots of hard drive noise?

And in case of possible flames for this being thread redux, I did search, but either I suck at the searching, or this hasn't been discussed before.

It's very nice. Great entry level unit, IMHO.

Oooo and what is that apple on the front of the CD tray.
In some of the pictures it looks snow esque, but in others looks metal.

I believe it was glossy - moreso than the iMac FP. It wasn't on a stand, though. In fact, the store rep told me that they were not "allowed" to put it on the stand. Maybe they're worried that someone might tip it over? It's a shame because he said it looks "much better" on the stand.

I'm going back next week to play with it some more. I think it's just what I'm looking for from a price/performance standpoint.

Hello all,

I just bought an eMac today from the Glendale Apple Store. Pretty cool. The finish is very much like the iBook's clean rounded edges. The Apple logo is metallic. I've heard posts from people who consider it <butt> ugly, but I actually think it looks far cleaner and sleeker than my current iMac DV. Apple has done a great job at creating a smooth, simple, tabula-rasa appearance that will not look dated for quite a while. My iMac's pin-striped plastic and smoke-grey "graphite" plastic seems quite tired by comparison.

Tadashi, thanks for posting those awesome photos of the eMac. They were exactly the type of size comparison I was looking for - the original iMac, eMac, and the flat panel G4 iMac. Excellent for sizing up the entire computer and their respective screen sizes. Tricking out the eMac with the Superdrive was sweet! I want one of those!!

I don't know if anyone noticed, but one of those linked pages shows how the CD-RW is a standard IDE device and the guy installed a DVD (or DVD-R) and he was watching DVDs!!

So anyone who wants an eMac that burns DVDs needs only to buy the burner too and install it.

I would definitely suggest purchasing the stand with the nifty little machine.

I finally saw an eMac first hand today. Looks very nice. The glossy finish is much like the iPod, and side-by-side they look very good. Unlike the iMac which has a matte white that doesn't suite the iPod as well.

As for noise I found the eMac to be very loud, about as loud as a g4 tower.

I also got to play with the iMac at 800 x 600 and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought it might be. Now I'm going to hold off for an update to the iMac and buy that. Hoping for a gf4MX and higher resolution screen.

The eMac is whisper quite compared with my Athlon 1600XP rig and the PC at work.

I'd say the eMac is less loud than the iMac Rev D. I just saw one today (man they're nice)

haha you know I honestly say I like the eMac form factor + stand more than the new iMac. I guess I'm weird but I'd sooner buy one of those things than a new iMac concidering the price diff

Just picked up an eMac yesterday for use at work. I first took it home to do some software transferring from my B&W G3. Side by side, the new eMac is much quieter, but not as silent as any fanless model iMac. The CD was a bit loud, with the usual whining sounds you get with CD rom drives.

All said, it's quite a swell machine...and not that noisy.

I saw four eMacs yesterday in different stores, and they were all very loud. IMHO it's something I couldn't stand for longer than a few minutes, it's really awful.
I agree that it looks nice and stuff, but the noise level is something that would really p*ss me off.
