Samsung has begun the marketing push for its
Galaxy Gear smart watch with a pair of ads airing during Sunday's NFL broadcasts. The two spots focus on the futuristic aspect of the wrist-mounted computer, showing how such technology has long been a fantasy. They feature wrist-mounted devices being used in audio and video from a long line of television broadcasts, from
Star Trek to
Predator on through
Power Rangers.
At the end of the litany of images and sounds, the commercials show either the Gear itself or someone using the gear, telling viewers that the technology has finally arrived. They close with Samsung's signature line, "The next big thing is here."
Introduced last month in Berlin, Samsung's Galaxy Gear is viewed by some as an attempt at gaining a foothold in the nascent wearable computing market before the unveiling of an expected iWatch from Apple. The South Korean tech giant reportedly has been working on such a device since 2011, but
reports have Samsung scrambling to finish development of the device once it learned Apple might be working on its own wearable.
The resulting Galaxy Gear is a powerful device that debuted to middling reviews at best. Tech industry observers panned its short battery life and limited functionality. Just days after its launch, Samsung is already
rumored to be working on a successor, and one official from the company admitted that Gear was possibly an insufficient offering.
"We've acknowledged that our Gear lacks something special. With more investment for user interface and user experience, Samsung devices will be better in terms of customer satisfaction," the official said.
