if its a 10.4 disc that is older than your 'book, you'll need a usb mouse. i had the exact problem, and until i ran system update and got the 10.4.4 update, the trackpad wouldnt work

When I get home, I'll try the mouse trick. Still, I have my iBook updated to 10.4.5, so it should work? I really need to repair disk permissions!

Not if the disk you're trying to boot from has an older System.

if the boot dvd is older, it may not have the right support for your hardware, so it doesnt see your trackpad, and asks for a mouse. what OS you have on the harddrive doesnt matter since you're loading what is on the DVD
