iDVD is such a cool program that it is keeping me for looking for a cheap mac without a SD. I feel like I need it and I want to use it.

I'm looking at the ibook G4, but worried since I can't get a superdrive with it.

I feel like there is no other choice besides DVD Studio Pro 2 which I assume is greaet, but expensive and probably overkill at this point.

What I'm really asking is, if I get the combo drive, and buy an exteranl DVD-R what programs can I use?

I know iDVD won't work.
Any other ones that work as well as iDVD to make DVD's to showcase short films?

Toast 6?

For backups, what can you use? is it built into Mac OS X?

Can I just drag and drop files onto the DVD?

Thanks.

I like being able to backup all important stuff onto one or 2 dvd's. I use backup (the one that comes with the .Mac account).

I'm sure you can just drag everything into the dvd and burn it from there also.

Yes but since you have a powerbook why buy a clunky external drive? The one reason I could think is speed because you can only get 2x write on the fastest PB superdrive. 4x on an external. I used iDVD for the first time a few weeks ago and burned 5 DVD's of a trip with friends. Get the Superdrive you wont regret it.

Get the superdrive if you do digital photography/work with iphoto/imovie/idvd.

If you don't work with photography and don't require large backups the superdrive would not be necessary.

If you DO work with digital photography/video then by all means get the superdrive.

I bet I have burned 50 DVD's in 6 months since I got my dvd burning dual g4 1.42. iMovie makes it very nice to make little movies of trips/events, and inexpensive DVD's today mean you can share your work easily.

I haven't bought a new computer yet, but I was deciding between a powerbook right now, a G4 tower, and the ibook G4.

and I was leaning toward the ibook G4 which has no superdrive. So know iDVD kicks ass.... but does anything come close?

I hope iDVD 4 works with everything.

I would go for an external one:
- faster
- cheaper
- if SD drives you still keep you PB intact to work with.

Just my opinion.
-Mac G4 867, 240Gb HD, +1gb Ram . OS9.2.2 and OS X 10,2,8
-iPod 10 Gb
-PB 12'' 1Ghz 768 RAM + AirPort Extreme OS X 10.2.8

I use idvd for previews of footage i give to people where a fancy original interface is not called for. So it's great for that. aside from that i use toast.
