<first blog thread for me>

tomorrow, im heading into the OR to get my tonsils and adenoids out. as this is the last instance i will have to do this (finally outgrew the parents' insurance plan) i figure that now is the time to do something about the snoring and breathing issues i have on a day to day basis. I'm 23.

anyone have any experience getting this done? i hear that ill be in pretty rough shape for the next week, but i guess that is nothing that opiates and ice cream can't solve.

who knows if the hospital has wireless, but im sure ill some free time on my hands.

No big deal. Had mine taken out when I was 6 or 7. Ice cream helps a lot.

Nothing to worry about. Probably one of the most routine surgeries out there. You'll have a sore throat for awhile but nice cold things help. Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress and post pics of them when they are out.

P.S. You two are so cuuuuute.

Wow, some people are confused...
Your uvula is the thing hangin down in the back of your throat that triggers your gag reflex.

No comments on why I know that, please.

I had it done when I was eight years old - you have a sore throat for a week. All you can eat is jell-o and ice cream. No big whoop.

You should be fine. This is usually a very common, routine procedure with usually no complications (especially in adults).

Many times it is an outpatient procedure, so you may not even be in the hospital overnight.

Good luck.

A little word of advice,... if you get a good looking nurse, fake like your having more than expected pain and see if you can get a sponge bath or two out of it.

I've spent around 3 years of my life in hospital, all in all, and have had, at last count, 12 operations under anasthetic. Most of them were fine - 5 seconds and you're gone and then you wake up - but a couple were really, really bad. Once, when I was 11, the anasthetic felt like some utterly cold, black claws reaching up from the pits of death to pull me down. I went under in total terror, and I was told later that I woke up screaming in the recovery room.

Just thought I'd cheer you up with that little heart warming story

Seriously though, anasthetics and their use have improved hugely since I was a kid, and tonsils removal is a pretty trivial operation. I hope you like ice cream and jello, because that's what you eat for a few days afterward.

I had mine taken out 2 years ago (when I was 22) and it was certainly not fun, but I'm SO glad I had it done. I haven't been sick even once since then - and before that I got a strep infection every 3 weeks, down to the day - for over a year!

So yeah, ice cream, popsicles, stuff like that. No hamburgers for ~2 weeks or so, I'm afraid. Anesthesia was no big deal, they've really perfected that since our parents were having that kind of thing done.

Caution, it is much easier for a youngster to have that surgery than somebody older like us. Kids are back up and around after a couple days. You will lose a week of your life, I imagine.

Just take it easy, follow the doc's instructions, watch for bleeding (the only real complication). Good luck!

PM me if you have any questions.

You're going to have a great time. The amount of pain involved is very small. So you basically get to laze around for a week. Everyone will be nice to you and bring you food and drink. Spend the week catching up on all the reading/movies/video games you've been meaning to get to. All good stuff, enjoy the process of recovering. If you can make it here to the Lounge in your weakened state, even WE might be nice to you... Get well soon(ish)

update: been there done that. thought i was going to have to spend the night in the hospital, but i was out at 6 after going in at noon. didnt really hurt yesterday, but today its getting to be a little more. im avioding the liquid vicodin in leiu of tylenol so i can drive later today. (have to get the missus to the station.) but, once she is on her way, its ON.

the drugs were alright, there were a few instances yesterday where i was all loaded, wanting to get up and test what they had put me on, but all i got in response to that was, "please sit down, Mr. Hawkes." musta hapened like 5 times. but the lady in the wheel chair waas practically running (i can be peruasive), so that was fun.

you all are right about that ice cream/ cold foods thing. anything else really sucks.

oh well, just wanted to say that im alive and TALKING (somehow) and that judge judy sucks (no cable TV / nothing but dial up here at my folks house.)

peace.

d4nth3m4n,

It's a very minor operation. The non snoring thing would be worth it, but I'm old now... so I would have to flip the bill on my insurance.

I had my tonsils and adenoids taken out when I was about 14 years old. The surgery was done around my B-Day. Aspergum was a very soothing medication in my case. Then the ice cream was enjoyable.

Did they use a scalpel or a radiowave device?

My older sister had the scalpel and she was out for about 10 days. My younger sis and I had the radiowaves and we were back to normal after 3.
My sister recommends creamsicles. I did protein shakes. Best of luck.
