Wondering about things like Adobe CS, MS Office, etc. Are they already Tiger-ready or are updates needed?

Few application vendors have said anything one way or the other. It is usually safe to assume that most apps are Tiger-ready unless the vendor has stated otherwise. Although Tiger has many new features for developers, the existing features haven't changed very much (from a developer's standpoint, anyway). Most big-name apps don't pull very many low-level tricks, so they should be able to just go straight across.
The one class of apps where I would not make this assumption would be those apps which attempt to modify a running system. Haxies are obviously in this category, as are anything which uses mach_inject (like QuicKeys) or SIMBL plugins (like PithHelmet). Check with the makers of these apps if you use them. In most cases, if an app such as these needs an update then that update has already been released. You can apply those updates now, so that you won't have to worry about them when Tiger is released.

I am concerned with the Palm syncing which always seems to have trouble with an OS upgrade.

Colorbyte has mentioned to some customers that they are unsure of compatibility with Panther and v6. Bummer, we run the RIP for two wide format printers from Macs.

What about FCP 4.5? I am a lowly college student and have not the funds to invest in FCP 5, but I do want and have pre-ordered Tiger.

Everything major works just fine. Minor apps have show stopper problems all across the board.

Office v.X looks nicer; 2004 is a bit better compatibility-wise, but you have to turn off so many 'features' to get just what you want, that I can see why you'd hang back. All that said, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I rarely use VPC so I can wait for a fix on any problems. But I'm glad to hear that Office will work fine.
And it sounds as if the unsanity stuff and gui area is also going to be right along.
Here's a question. Will Konfabulator work with Tiger, or will the Dashboard widgets supercede Konfab? I haven't followed DB much since I never had a beta of Tiger. Are most of the Konfab widgets going to have duplicates in Tiger?

I suspect he's talking about this one http://wsmanager.sourceforge.net/ I sincerely hope it does work, because it's amazing and I'd be lost without it. Any devs here with more money than I who can enlighten us?

I would assume that as soon as its in the hands of web monkeys everywhere, we'll see a glut of dashboard widgets. Dashboard has some clear advantages:
1) memory and performance
2) free with Tiger
3) each dashboard widget is a safari page.
4) anything that can be done inside safari (javascript, plugins, XMLHttpRequest, flash, etc)
Check out this daringfireball entry for a pretty good essay on both DB and Konfab, written right about the time everybody was freaking out that Apple ripped of Konfabulator. daringfireball article

There is an issue with VLC in Tiger. Some of the menu's don't update properly. The upcoming version of VLC will fix it. With 0.8.1 you can circumvent by opening the Help menu and then going to other menu's, (keeping the menu open).

For SPSS to work with Panther and G3, you have to upgrade to SPSS 11.0.3. When it comes to SPSS and 10.4, it is unfortunately a no-go...

So, in order to keep running SPSS (which I need) and ALSO move into Tiger, I should be able to partition my 30GB PowerBook into 3 drives; 1 with Tiger, 1 small one with 10.3.8 (and SPSS), and 1 really small one with OS9 for the RARE classic requirement, right? This way, to use SPSS I'd just have to change my start-up drive.

Yes, but backup and be very careful when you do this. In order to partition your drive, you need to completely erase what's on it - unfortunately, on the Mac, there's no way (that I know of) to partition a drive and keep its contents intact. Linux can do it, as can windoze, but not the Mac
Sorry if you already knew that, but not everyone does.

Thanks for the advice...
Yeah, I was going to do a clean install of Tiger, relying on my external LaCie for back-up.
Thanks again for the heads-up.

Yes, that is what I'm planning to do, expect that OS9 partition.

You are not quite right there. Do a google search on iPartition. Haven't tested it myself, but it is supposed to do exactly what you're looking for.

That sucks. I use StuffitExpander to zip files without hidden resource forks for Windows-based clients.

7.0.1? That's a pretty old version anyway unless it's a typo.
Btw. SE expands compressed files - it can't be used to compress and distribute files

Given how many apps are distributed in .sit format, I don't see how they could do that and not cause a hell of a lot of confusion for new users.
Not to mention the fact that there's no GUI utility that comes with the OS that can decompress .tgz, .tbz, and many other formats...

If you use your machines for production purposes it pays to be conservative and simply wait until all known compatibility and other bugs in the new OS have been guinea pigged by others and ironed out. It's never a good idea to jump to the newest of the new when you're doing production.
