I think it's very good for simpler work, but why don't you try it? Along with GimpShop, the front end that feels more like photoshop?
It's free, after all.

It isn't the friendliest UI by any means, but if you learnt to find your way around Photoshop, then it shouldn't be a problem. However, the menu layout is odd cf. Photoshop and will take some getting used to (and relative to any other OS X apps - it is an X11 app rather than designed for OS X... btw, gimpshop just puts a more Mac-like theme on top, but the underlying UI is the same). Personally, if you have e.g. Pages, I would use that instead.

I don't like GIMP. It was fine on Mac, I had really bad experiences on Windows for sure.

I don't really like it on either platform though. Too hard to use. Slow. Sluggish. Bad interface.

Here's using Adobe Fireworks CS3 (been using it since LONG before Adobe took it over).

I use Gimp a lot and I like it. I don't love it (it could be a lot better), but it meets my needs. This seems to be the best-maintained build for OS X right now.

If your friend plans to take the file to a printer, forget GIMP.

But for web and home printer use, it'll do the trick.

Well that depends entirely on the type of printer.
