I was just wondering if anyone else has the same problem I am having...
Until not long ago I was able to network my Mac to the PC just by turning on Windows sharing on the Sharing preferences (I have a Linksys router) Not anymore... going to the Connect to Server and Browse let me see the PC but when I click Connect I get the error message" "The alias (name of the PC) could not be opened because the original item cannot be found" I went on the Apple Support and the Discusion boards and found some threads of other people complaining about similar problems but they were using Windows servers and it said something about a password problem where OS X send encripted password? didn't really say how to resolve it... Anyway, I talked to Apple care rep that tryed to do all kinds of things (like change settings at the Directory Access) and nothing helped. Finally he said it's a known problem and will be fixed in a future software realese. He suggested to do Archive and install and go back to 10.4. I did. Still no go Updating to 10.4.1 was a disappointment too. It's strange that I can *sometimes* see the Mac and access it from the PC.
Anyone have the same problem? Any work arounds? Any application I can use instead for now until the fix? (too bad Dave is not an option, I loved this app) Any ideas will be welcome!
Thanks in advance!

Yes, same problem here (but I usually try to connect using Go -> Connect to Server or COMMAND-K, but and get a different error).

The problem ha been in all releases of Mac OS X 10.4 so far, although 10.3.x worked fine. It is not the same as the plain text password problem which caused similar problems with Mac OS X 10.4.x. The plain text passord problem can be worked around using the known nsmbd.conf file method. But that does not fix this problem.

The problem only seems to affect some Macs/Users/SMB servers, but I'm not sure what the differentiating factor is between when it works and when it doesn't.

I've found that I can connect fine to one file server here at work, but not to any others. The one I can connect to uses domain authentication. Not sure if that is the issue of not.

The current rumour is that it will be fixed in 10.4.3. I sure hope so, because Apple broke it badly for many of us.
