It looks like the architect of the P3 has retires [URL="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18335424/"]msnbc/URL]
The chief architect of Sony Corp.'s flagship PlayStation game console will retire in June as the company struggles to retain dominance in the video game industry and revive its flagging reputation as an electronics and entertainment pioneer.
Ending up in third place behind xbox and wii isn't helping sony's bottom line. I'm not surprised, lack of games and the excessive price are some big hurdles to over come. How many people are willing to spend that much money and then spend 40 to 60 dollars on the actual games. Seems kind of crazy to me

No its not, at least from an article I read somewhere (I forget where now). Sales of the PS2 are out pacing the PS3.

Not only sales of the PS3. The PS2 is also outpacing the XBOX 360.

That's a shame.
I'm not a big gamer, but do like the PS3s graphics the best on the few games I've seen.
But that price tag has always kept me away.

To boost sales, Sony should've put pictures of cats on the box,
or dogs/sheep that look like dogs.

No I mean based on when the PS2 launched and its sales. I remember all the same bitching and slow sales back then also.

I remember the same thing. It was REALLY freaking expensive back then too. I think the PS3 is going to be a loser this year, but pick up the pace the next few years, and then stomp on the Xbox and wii. It's just so powerful I don't see how it could happen any other way.

The PS2 sold for $300, which was the exact price the PS1 launched at as well. Both sold very well right out of the gate, and kept on selling well.

Since launching, the PS3 is being outsold almost 2 to 1 by the 360 and has yet to sell more in a single month then the Wii or 360.

$600 is simply too much money for a console. Sony really really screwed up.

Oh, and if it's so powerful, why don't PS3 games look better then 360 games? In the past systems with more power show their advantage from day 1. So far this has not been true at all.

I'll start worrying about Sony when they start releasing great games and still no one buys the system.

Gran Turismo will be a great benchmark.

Because most games so far are basically ports or something. There's a reason or two buried deep in the massive thread in the Gaming section.

There's a myth going around about a mystical section of the forums where gaming discussion happens. But no one has ever lived to tell the tale. Not sure how the myth got started then.

I'm wondering why no one has come in to mock you for not using the ALMIGHTY CONTROL PANEL™. I mentioned that I prefer not to use it, and I felt like a little kid getting bullied on the schoolyard for the next day.

If I was looking to buy a game console, a Blu-Ray player, and a Linux box, the PS3 would be a steal. But I'm not.

Of course, if Unreal Tournament 3 looks much better on the PS3 than everything else, I might be tempted to buy it.

Because they are ports of 360 games.

Motostorm looks way better than anything i have for 360. Not to mention 360 games are now second gen.

Show me some launch 360 titles next to PS3 launch titles and you will see the difference.

Well, too bad the PS3 isn't competing against 1st gen games in a time vortex. They are chasing a moving target, not a stationary one. By the time the PS3 hits gen 2, the 360 will be on gen 3.

I'm not saying that PS3 games look worse... just that they don't look better. The Xbox and Cube launched a year after the PS2 and looked better on day one. The SNES launched a year after the Genesis and looked better on day one.

More powerful systems should look better right away.

Besides, if sales figures continue this way, software developers are going to continue to use the 360 as the lead platform and the PS3 will be stuck with sloppy ports forever.

I think I read somewhere that 360 games outsell PS3 games 5 to 1.

If you were a developer, you would be nuts to develop exclusively for the PS3.

I think you're forgetting that developers have to learn to optimize better for the system. Take a look at Final Fantasy VII and the Final Fantasy IX on the PS1... or even FF X and FF XII on the PS2... or any near-launch title and a title launching after the system's been around for a few years. The more mature games always look better.

Combine this with the fact that programming for 7 cores (heck even the 360's 3 cores) is not something most developers have had experience with and you'll get games that look awesome on launch, but not jaw-dropping. The PS3's sheer processing power (250 GigaFLOPS!) has not been even to realized in any game yet. If you want to see how fast the Cell architecture really is, take a look at the system statistics for the Folding@home project... the PS3 dominates.

As shaders, antialiasing, and more realistic effects become more prevalent in games, devs will need all the processing power they can get. I predict in a year's time when the PS3 has more mature titles people will easily see the difference between the power of a 360 and PS3. A testament to this would be the recent launch of Oblivion for the PS3, of which Bethesda actually states that the processing power of the PS3 allowed them to incorporate better graphics into the title, with most important one being a much longer draw distance (which is probably the most computationally expensive aspects of a game).

The 360 is still nice though.

Yeah, for a BASE Ps2 system with only ONE controller. With another controller ($35) and a memory card ($30)
it was over $400 with only one game.

Which means the PS3, with superior power, and a game library only in it's infancy, is a much more future proof system. The PS3 will still look pretty good 5 years from now, whereas the 360 will probably look pretty dated.

Oblivion is the only cross platform game that looks better on the PS3. There are about 15-20 games that all look better or exactly the same on the 360. Bethesda had an entire year to port the game to the PS3, it damn well better run smoother.

People will figure out how to take advantage of the 360 at the exact same pace they figure out how to take advantage of the PS3.

And developers will be working harder on 360 games until the PS3 starts to perform better, which might be never at the current pace.

The 360 has a better library right now, a better library on the way, costs 50% less and is outselling the PS3 2 to 1. I'm not holding my breath for a turn-around anytime soon.

What event in the next year is going to turn things around for Sony? What do they have for the holiday season to go up against the 360 exclusives?

By that logic, the PS3 is a $710 system.
