I have a Mac Pro running 10.7.5. I needed a bigger back up hard drive so ordered a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA III from Amazon. It arrived today. I installed it and turned on the computer and got a window that said my computer can't read the new disk installed.

I'm not real computer literate but thought I knew enough to install a new HD. Evidently not. Can someone please help me either getting this one running or tell me what I need to order if the one I installed is the wrong HD for my computer.

Thanks for the help

Lemme guess, you swapped out the boot drive instead of the backup drive?

For the record: yes, new hard drives generally need to be formatted before they can be used.

The formatting (done with Disk Utility on a Mac) is what turns a piece of rastered metal into an addressable storage system for the computer.

Yeah, that was the problem (formatting). I have never added a new HD myself and didn't know it needed to be formatted before I could use it. A friend of mine told me how to do it. : )

Oh, I thought you'd get a message saying "no bootable disk" or maybe it's a sad Mac...I forget. Thanks for the info.
