I'm trying to get mysql up and running... I followed the instructions here
two different ways -- logged in as me and logged in as root. In either case when I run
Code:
sudo ./bin/mysqld_safe &
it says mysqld couldn't be found. I figured out the problem has to do with permissions on mysql/data so just as a test I turned the permissions as promiscuous as possible and ran it again. This time it just quits. Here's what the error log says:
Code:
030527 16:29:31 Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist 030527 16:29:31 Aborting
etc.

What's going on?

yeah, well, it still doesn't work though it's failing in a different way this time. I suspect it might be a permissions problem or a netinfo problem as most of the installation instructions I found had strange, byzantine instructions for making and modifying mysql users and groups...

Anyway the error of the day is as follows:
Code:
Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist
also I tried running mysql_fix_privilege_tables which causes the following error to be repeated ad nauseum
Code:
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

I really don't know where to start as I've looked in all install instruction pages for Mac OS X and done repeated searches for the error messages I've come across on google.

You have your mysqld process running from your unix temp dir, in most cases when an app uses this directory it resets its privs, If you are getting this error then the last step for you to do is get info on /private/tmp and make sure all three options say read-write
