I don't know why, but all of the sudden I've been listening to some British rock/pop bands, and I am finding that I like it. I really enjoy bands like Muse and Snow Patrol. If I like these bands, what are some others that perhaps the UK based NNers would recommend? I would prefer these bands to be pretty clean, no eff this and eff that every other verse. Thanks in advance.

Music at the top of the British charts is 10x better than the music on the top of American charts.

I'll be peeping in on this thread throughout.

Yes, I agree. Although I never understand why Rihanna is always on top of their charts too.

You know what? I just checked the UK's charts, and it's not 10x better. Maybe 2x.

But at least their pop/rock is better.

It depends on the year really. 2005-2006 there seemed to be a good amount of original stuff on their charts. I just get tired of all the crap on the US charts, like Touch My Body, No Air, Love In This Club, Don't Stop the Music, etc. A lot of it is very unoriginal and quite frankly boring.

Bleh, I am NOT happy that Muse became as popular in the states as it is.

How am I supposed to be elitist about them like I was 5 years ago?!

And I bet they're not going to stop by and play the Pagent in St. Louis anymore.

Damn yous!

Mogwai. Start with "mr beast" and work your way back.

If you dig Snow Patrol, go find Belle & Sebastian and Reindeer Section. Belle & Sebastian has a ton of albums, and they're all good. Reindeer Section (basically a snow patrol side project) has only a couple albums, they're worth looking into.

You'll probably also like the Danish band Mew.

I asked Matt Bellamy if he liked Mew (as we had misheard "Muse is here" as "Mew is here" earlier at the party), and he said he liked what he had heard).

Although I wouldn't exactly call Belle & Sebastian or Reindeer Section "Rock", I can wholeheartedly back up scaught's recommendation.

Unfortunately, I'm not hip enough to know what is new and hot, or even if it is British, but some stuff I have enjoyed recently include The Fratellis, Regina Spektor and Duffy. I don't know that I could identify Snow Patrol, but I hear them mentioned alongside Arctic Monkeys and The Kaiser Chiefs a bit.

Of course, these may be old hat.

But as for the contention that the UK pop charts are 10x (or even 2x) better than the US pop charts, I'm thinking it's a case of the unfamiliar seeming more interesting. Pop music sucks here too. This is a country in which the Bob the Builder theme song reached number 1.

Good British rock?

OK, here we go...

Iron Maiden.
Black Sabbath.
Magnum.
Tygers of Pan Tang.
Saxon.

Ummm. That's about it.

Please stop devaluing the word "rock" by applying it to limp pop combos. Thanks.

I think British music is in a bit of a state at the moment. Although if you like Snow Patrol, how about bands like Keane and Ghosts? Or even Feeder. I don't massively rate any of these bands though to be honest.

Or buy my bands EP. Not the rockiest thing in the world though, but who knows, you might like it.

Butterflies On Strings
/shameless plug.

The only big current UK bands I really like are Bloc Party, Radiohead and Elbow. There may be a couple more but I'm struggling to come up with many.

1) They suck.
2) They're too British for me.
3) They're not rock.

Since the thread title is "Good British rock", they thus only manage a one out of three.

Supertramp, the earlier the better. Surely and Indelibly Stamped are very groovy, very different from their later stuff.

Rolling Stones not rock? What planet are you living on?

I'm not really a Stones fan, but to say they aren't a rock band is nothing short of stupidity. With a dash of ignorance.

The planet where the Rolling Stones are "rhythm and blues".

Saw UFO live last Friday night. They flat out kicked arse (speaking of British). Hair on the back of my neck stood up when "Lights Out" began.... what a powerful intro!

I'm liking UFO a lot. I also really enjoy Mogwai and Reindeer Section. I haven't tried out anything else yet, but yes brass, I've listened to the Beatles before.

the OP is interested in british rock

The Turtles are an American pop, psychedelic and folk rock band defined by a good-natured, joyously melancholic and occasionally cheeky sound. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 1960s and a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles but remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together".
