I wonder becuase if the next version of the iBook isn't an even gigahertz, I think Apple will go to an all-G4 lineuip. Does anyone knoow what the Sahara produced by IBM can clock at?
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

directly from IBM- "The PowerPC 750FX is planned to initially debut at 700 MHz, with versions at speeds up to 1 Ghz later that year.".... so the range they have is 700- 1GHz. samples of the 750fx chip were according to their site going out starting in jan of this year...

I've heard rumors that there are a few 1.5GHz G3's floating around, if only Apple would use them... And it seems that IBM hasrepeatedly demonstarated that they are up to the task of making the G3 Apples primary desktop chip (Again), if IBM knew that Apple had a serious interest in the chip, I'll bet we would see a G3 2GHz+ sooner than most people think.

Some of the RS6000 and AS/400 models use 2GHz or faster G3 chips now, but require liquid cooling. Fastest RS6000 I've heard of that doesn't use advanced cooling was at 1.8GHz, but that was about 6 months ago (or so...). The air cooled over 1.4GHz do not appear on the current roster, as far as I can tell by IBM's website. I do not know why. Current fastest liquid cooled I see on the AS/400 site is 2.5GHz.

Low power chips for notebooks these ain't!

The current G3 that is in the iBook tops out at 700mhz. (just like the very last CRT iMac)

I say one more speed bump to 700mhz and after that, the iBook will move to G4. By that time the PowerBooks will be up to 1Ghz

I'm inclined to agree with gumby5647. The real benefit of the G3 will be next year with the higher end models come down in price. I was having an email conversation with the tech dept. at Sonnet. He said the cost of the faster chips is just too high during the first year of their release for them to reasonably put them into their upgrades. By next year, we'll probably see the 800s in upgrade cards.
