My 12" Combo Drive is, according to Apple, meant to be a 4x burner.
Turns out it's an 8x, though. Is this normal
(not that i'm complaining... )

How did you find out it is an 8X? I'm pretty sure that mine is the expected 4x, but I'm curious now...

toast identifies it as a CRX800E, which I looked up and found that it's a DVD/CD-R with 8x burn.
I can burn at 8x, and iTunes says "Burning (8x)" or something when it's recording.

I bought an ibook reciently and receved it last Tuesday. I have an 8x burner as well, so you aren't the only one.
And speaking of burning, I've come to the conclusion there there is a severe lack of decent cdr programs out for the mac. When I got this ibook, I was going to write an irc program, because I couldn't find a decent one of those either(snak doesn't float my boat) But I just compiled BX, said the hell with it, and started a cdr program. I couldn't find anything that could burn a bin/cue image, DiscJuggler CDI, or a Nero image. At least I bring my linux mentality to OSX....if there isn't a program to do it, that's why they give you GCC.

Does anyone know if the combo drive from the 14.1 ibook can be put into the 12.1 ibook. I know that the 14.1 has an 8x. My 12.1 only has a 4x and I am looking to upgrade it. Thankx.

here is the deal everyone..... apple has changed their specs. the combo drives are now 8x8x8x24 Sony CRX800E drives..... i confirmed this by looking in Apple system profiler on a 12.1" and 14.1" at a local reseller. Apple had originally put in 4x4x6x24 drives (made by toshiba) but they have since changed suppliers or added a second supplier. Apple's www site still lists it as the 4x4x6x24 in 12.1" and the 8x in 14.1" but the Apple developer notes does not make this distinction. one difference to look for is model #- M8599LL/C are the new 12.1" combos M859999LL/A are the older ones.....

Did Apple ever use the Toshiba SD-R2102 8x8x24 in the 14.1 inch ibook?

Well, the only negative I can think of with the 8X burner is that I don't think there's any RPC-1 Region Free solution for it... yet.
My Toshiba 4X plays foreign DVDs quite happily with the firmware update.
This is irrelevant for most people however, and there will be a Sony one soon enough I'm sure.

Dunno, but I've got a Toshiba SD-R2102 in my 12.1" iBook that I bought a couple of weeks ago and it's 8x anyway. :-)
In fact, it's better than the Combo drive in my 2001 Quicksilver G4/733 as it has buffer underrun prevention!

I recently got my 12.1" iBook back from repair (a backlight problem). To my surprise they upgraded my combo drive to the new 8x Sony model. Good old Apple.
However theres no bloody firmware patch for it yet, so I cant watch my foreign dvds! ah well

I bet your iBook will be a "Kelly Hogan"
Definition of a "Kelly Hogan"
Machine never works, corrupts files, has a corrupt OS X CD, often has hardware problems, repeats itself alot(Infinate Loops) etc...
ie not nice at all. Often brought on by the Bad Karma of the User...
Cheers Edd
