I just saw the new Apple commercial, downloaded it from the Apple site. It was a pretty good commercial. Do you think Apple should put something like Apple computer underneath the Apple symbol or there web address? Some think that they should because Apple shouldn't depend on there Name recognition. I for one don't think that there name recognition is the problem with the commercials.

One of the best Apple ads ever, IMO. I just wish they had said something about it being $1299.

Both are indeed very nice ads. A lot better than those iMac ones (starring flower power and blue dalmation) and also a lot better than the music one. Both show case the beauty and the versatility of the mac.

In the airplane one, why does that woman give the mac guy a disaproving look when he shows his girlfriend on his iBook?

That's the only thing that bothers me about the two ads.

Agreed. What's her damage?

Maybe she thinks it's going to be porn? Of course she does barely crack a smile when the dog comes on. Wonder what that tells us...?

I like the ads. Very cool, as usual.

I think the commercial is great, but there are a few things that bother me. It does send some mixed messages - it's a small laptop that you can burn CD's on, edit movies, but the guy takes up truckloads of space with all that crap! Did they really need to have his Palm sitting in it's cradle next to the iBook? Does he really need to have 15 CD's in full sized jewel cases stacked up beside it? I thought you were supposed to be able to store all your music ON the iBook, not beside it.

Well, maybe I'm just being too picky. My first impression of the ad was that it was excellent - hopefully most people have the same initial impression and want one. I sure do!!

I thought the "Middle Seat" ad was flaky and rather disinteresting. It takes a long time to get to the point, and none of it is funny.

But, I like the "Universe" one because it throws some fancy special effects at you, tells you what they want you to hear, and it's done. Clean and simple.

i loved the middle seat ad until i heard that hanes sond. "who lets the dogs out ?" anyone in their right mind would NOT use that one particular song in a commercial. im gonna smack that bitch up(whoever decided to use that tune).
i mean come on, if they wanted to look hip/cool, by playing RAP, they could have used Nelly, or Limp Bizkit, etc, etc.
'who let the dogs out ?'...its beyond me really.

"who let the dogs..." makes me want to hurt someone...
but it's a big pop hit, played at ballgames.
anthemic in it's way (don't argue with me, i said i didn't like it)

worst-case scenario:
apple sells an extraordinary number of iBooks, and we find the forums swamped with britney spears & survivor fans...

& are suddenly not so special anymore...

i say "bring it on!"

On the non airplane one, when the guy says something about music/mp3s, it says in white print on the bottom, "Don't Steal Music." I just thought that was funny.

the "universe" one seemed very jeff goldblum although THANKFULLY its not him. it didnt strike me as very interesting. after watching it i dont remember anything about it.

i liked the middle seat one alot more than the other one. i think the look on her face that we're all referring to may be some sort of bad edit. they usually make these commercials longer and edit them down. thats all i can figure. they are certainly better than previous commercials i.e. those horrible itunes commercials.

also, wheres the apple name? www.apple.com? anything? i know the apple logo is pretty well all you need to see to know whats up, but still. they dont have 5% market share for nothing. i wouldnt be so ready to take that chance.

most importantly, when is apple going to try and show people what their computers can do? show how easy it is to rip MP3s, something. cmon.

I agree, that was my first thought....does it take up 3 trys for the iBook?

exactly! And on the other one, when the mp3 player goes by at hte end and reveals "iBook" it makes it look like the mp3 player IS the iBook. If I hadn't been drooling over iBooks for the last couple weeks, I'd have been confused. Of course, as Cipher can tell you, I'm ALWAYS confuzzled...:-/

The new commercials are so Apple but I cant say I'm thrilled. I liked the iTunes ads by the way. The airplane one was kind long but still cool, although I am wondering about that women's look. I see what some of you mean when you say the iBook hub commercial was forgeable. All in all they are ok. Apple needs a retail store ad campaign now,FAST!

Funny commercial, though I'd probably pimp slap
that annoying guy for hogging up the plane like that, that's just rude.

But I am curious as to why Apple didn't show the price.

BTW, IMO Apple should somehow offer a $999 ibook.

I don't think it's much of a risk. The Apple logo is one of the most recognized corporate logos in the world. Easily right up there with the Swoosh or the Golden Arches. Regardless of how much most people know about Mac's, they can recognize one if they see that Apple any where on it. Recognition of the Apple brand is not a problem. The problem has more do with people not understanding what it is that makes Macs different. They just know that they are different.

Don't worry, the quality sucks 'cause to took it down to 10k.

I thought this was interesting. What plane have you ever been on where all the lights are off. What if someone had to go to the bathroom. They'd fall! Ah well, it doesn't make the commercial any less cool. I think the song was a good choice simply because you know that old white guy has never heard it before. It's a kids thing and he said, "You like those guys?" Anyway, who'd listen to music like that when they are working on a video. Sound is half the editing.

OK, enough with nit picking. My roommate figured out why the woman has the look on her face (he didn't really "figure" it out, he just saw it right away). She is disapproving of what he is doing in iMovie, like maybe he just cut the video somewhere and she didn't think it was a good move, so she gave the look saying, "Change it back."

I think it's because it started out longer so when they cut it, that part ended up being harder to see.

I'm downloading the other one right now.

Why does Apple's ad firm keep casting overly-nervous male teenagers? First in concert and now in airplane. They don't seem to complement what Apple's doing at all.

This post from the iBook forum sums it up nicely:

"The airplane ibook commercial is the DUMBEST commercial out of apple in a long time. Holy crap, it's just terrible-- a guy that rudely takes 3 trays for his crap, starts making what the woman next to him thinks are porn movies of his girlfriend, and then plays that moronic "who let the dogs out" song. Three strikes, you're out. The only scene missing from the commercial is when the people in the exit row throw him out the emergency exits of the plane as they yell "we let the dog out" and steal all his gear (being doubly sure to delete the moronic mp3s he's collected.) The whole ad is stupid and entices nobody to get an iBook."

I think it's awful.

I think it's awful.
The kid thoughtfully waits until the other passengers are asleep before he uses their trays.

He unthoughtfully unplugs his headphones and the music blares... BUT:

the commercial is metaphorical at that point, because the music implies something has changed regarding technology. Also, its brilliant satire on the music itself that he is using it in an imovie of his girlfriend and their new puppy. The music is deconstructed through satire and metaphor.

You should knw from the comic look on the flight agent's face when he asks for a middle seat that the commercial is about thinking different and shaking things up from a satirical perspective. I'll bet this commercial plays very well to middle school kids who want that same arrogance and rebelliousness they see here, and will ape on their parents to help them get such a slick little notebook.

The hip, nervous, nerd kids out there ARE apple's market for the ibook.
When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say "live and let live."
But if this ever changing world, in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, say "live and let die."

Man, y'all are putting way too much into analyzing these commercials. Middle seat: guy wants the middle seat to spread out all his gear. Nobody's going to thing "oh God, Apples suck because you need three trays to fit all your **** on!" calm down. Using that stupid who let the dogs out song was a joke. watch the lady's facial expression when she hears it. It's so obviously a joke. If you didn't get it, you have no sense of humor and you need to stop surfing Mac news sites and go indulge in some real-life human interaction. It's a commercial, for God's sakes.

First, let us just count our blessings that Apple isn't using Jeff Goldblum anymore!

Second, if you give me a choice between the Dell kid and the Apple kid on the plane, I definitely beat the living crap out of the Dell kid -he's such a freaking dork, it's unbelievable.

I don't care about the bad song, I just think it's high time Apple started showing how their computers were useful, not just pretty.

"Ooh, an 8 inch cube computer! That's cool..."

*goes off and plays Q3 on Win98 blissfully unaware of why anyone would actually buy a "cube computer"*

Everyone can tell the machine is pretty. You don't need a stupid voiceover saying "LOOK HOW PRETTY IT IS!!!!" That's obvious, you need someone telling you why to buy it.

I thought it was a good move. It's no "Think Different," "HAL2000," or "1984" (the holy trinity of Apple ads IMO), but it's better than our pal Jeff and the whirling dizzy iMacs.

i like both of the new commercials myself..... but i have some small arguement points.....

in "middle seat" as some one else said, why do u need all that stuff on there. a palm, who syncs their palm on the plane, with a pile of CDs and a digital camera....

in "universe" has no one noticed the last product they show before they go to the logo/tagline is not even the iBook!! the last thing u see before the logo screen is the MP3 player (if memmory serves correct watched the commercial this afternoon) this i think is a huge error. why not show the product u r trying to sell in the parting shot?!?!

I think people are definitely over analyzing this ad. I never got the impression that the iBook takes up too much space. My impression is that he was attaching a lot of stuff to it. That's a Good Thing. I didn't think he was being rude, jittery maybe. It's also a lot more tongue-in-cheek than people here seem to get. Don't take it too seriously, they don't. Perhaps it could have been a little more overt in the joke, but then it would just drip with cheesy badness even more than some seem to prefer already. Good commercial overall.

One thing is for sure, the song gets your (or at least my) attention from across the room just in time for the Apple logo every time. It's all about mindshare.
