Aloha all. Is there anyone that can tell me if I can use the Developer tools like interface builder, to remove metal from the carbon apps, finder in particular. I like Tiger but want to get rid of the metal, Even the unified would be cool.Is it possible? If so could someone post steps? Mahalo in advance... JB

One easy way to do it is to use the modified Extras.rsrc file available from Resexcellence:

http://www.resexcellence.com/themes/index_59.shtml

I'm currently using it (instead of Shapeshifter) to get a nice plastic/Unified FInder appearance.

Mahalo Mighty Mike, I tried it but after the first two steps Terminal tells me "there is no such file" so nothing changes. If possible could you give me a step by step how you did it? Did you hit return after each entry? Mahalo in advance..JB

No problem. First, make sure you're logged into an account with Administrator privileges. Decompress the archive and copy the Extras.rsrc file to the desktop.

Next, fire up Terminal.app. Type the following (beware of typos!) and hit Enter:

cd /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Versions/A/Resources/

Next, rename the old version of Extras.rsrc, so you have a backup:

sudo mv -i Extras.rsrc Extras.rsrc.back

When you hit Enter, you'll be prompted to enter your password. Do it to complete the step.

Finally, move the new, brushed-free Extras.rsrc file to the proper location:

sudo mv -i ~/Desktop/Extras.rsrc .

(Note the space and the period at the end)

Enter your password once more (this may not be necessary, depending upon your system configuration).

Now you should reboot to make sure that every program will use the correct, modified Extras.rsrc file.
