My search function keeps giving me an error, so I apologize ahead of time if this topic's been already posted.

Is there anyway to format an iPod so that it is usable on both PC and Mac at the same time?

A co-worker mentioned that his daughter formated her iPod as a PC one.
so I tried doing that...

iTunes recognizes that there's a library at work (PC), and library at home (Mac); I've retained the library from home. So all that's fine...it's too bad I can't get the same library to be present, exactly, on both computers. Not a big deal.

Anyhow, the more important item is using the iPod as a portable drive between the two machines.

I can copy stuff to the iPod while I'm at work, that's no problem. However, I was expecting and hoping that the drive, when plugged into the Mac, would mount.

It does, for a brief half second, then disappears. So thus far, I've had no luck using the iPod as a portable go-between drive to work and home.

Anybody have any advice on this?

Format it for use on a pc. It will work flawlessly on your mac (I do it with my brother's iPod when listening to his music or transferring files from both computers (my parents have WLAN at their place which is kinda slooooow for big files)).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
