Hasn't changed in a long time on Macs. Anyone think we're due for a change with the first Intel Macs?

Yeah, a new startup chime would be nice, especially considering that the current chime isn't even the coolest one Apple's used. (That honor goes to the Twentieth Anniversary Mac.)

So I am alone in thinking that they should simply stop using any form of startup sound altogether?

MacTracker has all the startup chimes associated with every Mac ever made. The fun thing is that it also has all the "death" chimes that used to play if the memory test failed on older models. I particularly like the death chime for the Performa 5215.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I will be happy with whatever startup sound that Steve chooses.

Thank you for the link, Charles, I didn't realize the program was being actively developed again.

I want Jay (of Jay & Silent Bob fame) saying "BONNNGGG!!" as a startup sound. Anyone got a clip of that?

I always thought the Performa 630 startup chime was the best, the PM 8100 following close in second place - very tasteful. The sound we have now is of course a classic.

Speaking of which the best sound is the original *beep*

cheers

You are clearly deranged.

There are very few things more annoying than electronic appliances (computers involved) that go 'beep' when you press something, or in pretty much any other circumstances. The only time I allow any of my electronic gadgets (be it cell phone, computer, TV, camera, or anything else) to go 'beep' is to warn me that it's about to run out of battery. And of course my alarm clock, when it wants to wake me up. Other than that: SILENCE!

Yeah, the TAM sound is much cooler than the (somewhat tinny sounding) piano chord our iBook makes.

I think it would be interesting if different product lines had their own startup sounds. Light and free sounds for the laptops, and something pipeorganish for the quad G5s. Just a little spice in the mix.

Piano chord? I thought the iBooks all used the same startup sound as the rest of the Mac line currently uses.

Nope. I am not a fan of the start up chimes.

Sometimes my wife will have left the volume up very loudly while playing music in the house during the day. Since I work 3rd shift, on my nights off I don't turn the computer on untill midnight or later. If I forget to turn the ext. speakers off I usually wake up the whole house.

Very annoying.

That's what it sounds like to me. Maybe it's the speakers or the way this sound is produced versus sounds that come from an app. But to me it sounds like a tinny upright piano chord.
