i haven't gotten tiger yet and don't plan to, until their is a way to kill dashboard and remove it from the dock.

i've talked with people about it and they hate that it can't be turned off. if you remove it from the dock, it'll come back.

is their anyway to kill it?

I've removed it from the Dock--it hasn't tried to come back.

even after restarting?

someone on another forum i visit, said it keeps coming back for them...not sure if its after a restart or not though.

Isn't that kind of extreme, not upgrading because you don't like the look of an icon in the dock?

not really. i'm picky about my dock. i only want things on it that i use frequently and since dashboard is something i'll never use, i want it gone.

You can just drag it off the Dock and it will puff away and not come back.

Just to clarify, the icon can be removed but Dashboard is still running. It's actually tied to the Dock (take a look at the contents of the Dock.app package).

It's not running before you first use it. Don't use it and you don't have to quit it.

ok so...if i get tiger, when i boot up, just remove it from the dock and dashboard is gone for good, right?

Super, take it off the dock don't use it and you'll be A-okay! but then you'll probably complain when you notice there is a dashboard process using 0% cpu usage in the background.

Don't upgrade to tiger. Stay on panther.

i'd stick with 10.3.9, but i'd like to have the new ichat, mail (even though it's ugly as hell), quicktime and safari that all come with tiger.

plus i hope to get a slight speed boost with tiger, like others claim to get.

does dashboard have an actual application thats in a folder, which can be deleted? if it does, it shouldn't run after that...

i just read that in apple's forums. i just wish they would let people quit the stupid thing.

You are dense. People already told you it's a feature of the Dock. It can't be "quit" just like Dock magnification can't be "quit". If you don't like the feature just don't use it.

No widget process is running before you use Dashboard the first time, so there is no need for you to quit them if you're not using the Dashboard.

if its a "feature" of the dock, then why does it have an icon on the dock? plus, last i knew, you could "quit" the dock using the terminal.

also, you can stop the dock magnification, simply by making it not magnify.

I'm very picky about my dock too, so I understand. Happily, my Dashboard icon has never tried to come back, and I use Dashboard a lot. I was worried when I booted for the first time and saw that icon there, but it looks like it was just for show.

Transparent dock allows an option to do that

why you guys are giving this guy a hard time, I don't know. I found it annoying too. I just went through and quit all the dashboard widgets, poofed the icon, reset f12, hopefully it won't come back to haunt me.

Use TinkerTool. It gives you the option of disabling Dashboard.

I love how worked up people get about something they can't see (once they've turned off F12 and removed it from the dock), takes up 0% cpu, and ~0MB of ram.

btw, how do you turn off the magic fairies feature in OSX? I can't see it and it isn't using any resources, but I know it's there. It's bugging me.

You'd have to define "gone". Once you RESTART the memory-sucking Dashboard is not RUNNING... until you accidentally click on its icon (or go to a corner that has been set as a hot-corner for it).

I can understanding not wanting to have an icon in the Dock that sucks up huge resources and has no Quit command :/

Dock is definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer IMHO... despite its coooLLLness factor.
