Frankly I forgot what I did, but I have a fortune (Calvin&Hobbes quotes) pop up randomly in addition to my MOTD. Is this what you mean?

btw, I know this is not that special. I've seen people talking about colored text, etc. But I'm pretty proud of my little "hack".

I don't use one on my OS X machine, but on a few FreeBSD servers I have:

[ -x /usr/games/fortune ] && /usr/games/fortune limerick

freebsd-tips is more educational but limerick is just so much more entertaining.

fortune and such things aren't installed with OSX, are they? At least I don't have a /usr/games directory.

if you're tired of reading long fortunes:

fortune -so

Short & Offensive

many unix systems have it setup so that users get a random fortune upon login. you also have a .plan and .project file. we're kind of addicted to .plan files in my circles. it's quite useful to keep your friends updated on happenings in your life, just to vent, or to post random links to stuff you've found online that day.
the .project is generally more longterm. you know, like "find buried treasure" or "conquer earth"
