Sure takes up a lot of my cpu resources. Can I stop it? Couldn't find any info on Google. It looks like it has something to do with the top utility...

The process is called pstopdffilter and is part of some printerdrivers (Canon?).

pstpdffilter converts postscript (.ps) to PDF. This would run when printing or when reformatting information for any program that works with graphics. Were you printing or running any other programs that might deal with PDF output? You aren't running a version of LaTeX or related typesetting software are you?

I know Preview uses it to open eps files by converting them to pdf files.

Perhaps this is Apple's way of ensuring ps compatability to all programs and to create pdfs in the Print dialog box.

I just created an Automator workflow to convert my eps files to a smaller and more useful pdf format. It uses the pstopdf shell script because for some odd reason Apple left pdfs off their Automator conversion routine for preview.
I look forward to a future where the present will be in the past.

you might want to log into CUPS to see if there are any old print jobs running amok

Log into CUPS by going to http://localhost:631 and then click on Jobs.

Which username/password does one use when examining one's CUPS system?

Oops, nevermind. It's the admin user and its normal password. And the user name is case sensitive-that was my oops.
