Your assumption is entirely reasonable, turtle - there could be different GSM and CDMA release schedules, although that's not Apple's style at all. Apple has said its global plan is to have one phone type for the whole world. It's unusual enough that the 3GS 8GB model has lasted as long as it has along side the iPhone 4. I think Apple would much rather release an iPhone 5 at one time in GSM and CDMA variants rather than keep CDMA a generation behind. But it's not impossible that we could see it the way you suggest; I suppose it is most likely that they will be on different schedules given that the announcement is apparently coming tomorrow. (But it's hard to believe Verizon's going to want to settle for being a generation behind AT&T and the rest of the GSM world.)

Note, however, that what I said was Apple won't release an iPhone 4 for Verizon this year and then a few months later release an iPhone 5 for Verizon. It could release an iPhone 4 in CDMA and then an iPhone 5 for GSM, but it won't release an iPhone 4 CDMA only to make it obsolete with an iPhone 5 CDMA in the same year. That seems to be what Jack was suggesting, but maybe I read his post incorrectly.

I would think it's possible this is a revised GSM/CDMA iPhone 4, perhaps even a 4.5, if those leaked parts are for this phone and not another phone in July. Although it is possible that Apple could ramp up to a 6 month lifecycle on the iPhone to counter the pace of Android phones.

Hmm I think I will wait for the mere fact of Verizon iPhones flooding their system like when the 1g iPhone came out, which I had, there was killer data outages on 'Edge' YUK! So I will wait and sweeten my Fios package with my iPhone when things calm down. Then everything on one bill! ahh nice!

AT&T just said this morning that "we are much bigger than iPhone exclusivity." So I think it's official.

Huh. You can't talk on the phone while using data services. Lame.

Apparently they fixed the antenna.

It does have the new antenna design we were hearing about last week, but that's just because CMDA requires a different configuration of antennas.

Ehh I'm glad it's at Verizon, but no reason to switch until it goes 4G. I'm gonna wait.

Summary, based on current reports, subject to future revelations of Verizon iPhone 4 limitations or, shall we say, "features": 1/11/2011

--CDMA only, not LTE. No microSIM card slot.

--can't do voice and data usage at same time

--data plans not revealed yet.
Update: MacWorld has excellent voice and data and message plans comparison
http://www.macworld.com/article/1570...att_plans.html

--download speed faster on ATT (--typical 3 Mbps?) than on Verizon (--600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps)
Update: Here's PCWorld's February 2010 speed comparison article
http://www.pcworld.com/article/18959...ance_test.html

--Not a world phone, unless Verizon has deals with overseas CDMA operators. Europe, Africa, much of Asia do not have CDMA networks. Verizon does carry "global" phones which feature both CDMA and GSM, but their iPhone 4 doesn't qualify.

--here's a list of countries (and rates) where the Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 will work:
Update: Only 40 countries for voice, and only 20 countries for data
International Roaming

--new antenna design needed because it's CDMA. Needs 4 antennas, so 4 breaks around periphery. Jury still out on whether Apple got it right this time, but it's been in testing for a year so surely they knew what bugs to correct?

--no Verizon bloatware, no Verizon logo

--your existing Verizon apps won't work on iPhone 4

--can function as hotspot for up to 5 devices. What happens to hotspot usage when there's a phone call incoming?
Update: data services will stop with an incoming phone call

--no reports on whether Apple renounced the 10% restocking fee should you decide the VZ-iPhone doesn't work for you

--same price as ATT phones, with 2 year contract.

Additional updates:

--current VZ subscribers will gain visual voice mail, but will lose all current voicemail boxes and will lose all current voice mails (and cannot be recovered.)

Hmm. So, methinks a GSM/CDMA worldphone = iPhone 5, if those Qualcomm rumors were correct.

Yeah, I'd consider a LTE GSM/CDMA worldphone from Verizon. Until then, I'll stick with AT&T.

If Apple makes a worldphone, they can go back to just producing a single phone. People can ignore the CDMA part if they use it on AT&T.

seems to me that Apple is unlikely to make a world phone, because it wouldn't be to their financial benefit.

Right now, they're going to make a ton of money because you'll have to buy a second phone if you want to switch to Verizon from ATT. Then, if you want to switch back, you'll have to buy yet another phone because you'll naturally want to have the most current phone.

I'm not so sure. On Verizon, the best selling BlackBerry and Android phones are both their worldphones.

Forever. You can't unlock CDMA phones. That's why the rest of the planet uses GSM.

Of course, you can't officially unlock the AT&T iPhone either. And since the iPhone Dev Team seems to be struggling with the 4.2.1 update, you may not be able to get an unofficial unlock going forward, either.

I decided to Google this again, because it used to be true that you couldn't unlock a CDMA phone.

Apparently Verizon is the only company that doesn't use a SUBSIDY code on their CDMA phones. With some specific software (or a visit to a certain store) you can have the phone unlocked. Presumably it can be set for Verizon again.

However, Sprint does utilize the SUBSIDY code on their phones, making them vendor locked. So it's technically possible you could use a Verizon phone on Sprint. However, good luck convincing Sprint to let you use it. You could use a Sprint phone on Verizon, but since Sprint utilizes the random SUBSIDY codes, it's unlikely you'll find out the SUBSIDY code; it's a random 8- or 16-digit code.

There was an exemption added to the DMCA that does not criminalize unlocking GSM phones.

Will FaceTime operate normally on verizon? For some reason I thought on ATT that the video was carried by data, but the voice was still "voice".

I'm guessing a leapfrog refresh cycle is definitely going to happen...AT&T being at least 6 months quicker on the iPhone 5 than Verizon.

I understand it's not illegal to unlock a locked handset without vendor approval, but that doesn't mean it is necessarily going to be available for the AT&T iPhone in the future. It seems like all other GSM iPhone providers unlock after the contract period, and even AT&T operates that way for all other cell phones. The iPhone is the sole exception.

Making matters worse, Apple seems to finally be gaining the upper hand in the cat-and-mouse game it's been playing with the hackers. The iPhone Dev Team said it would have a cleaner 4.2.1 jailbreak/unlock out around Christmas, but they haven't updated their site for weeks now.

So the Verizon phone has this Personal Hotspot in the software to act as a MiFi type 'WiFi bubble' for up to 5 devices, rumour is that this will come to other iPhones with iOS 4.3. Any info on whether this lets you hook an iPad to an iPhone's connection? Tethering won't let you do that.

If it simply enables wifi sharing, I don't see any way they could disable an iPad from connecting (not reliably, anyway).

If it's offering wi-fi, the iPhone has no way to tell what kind of device is connecting, whether it's an iPod, iPad, another phone, a laptop, etc.

What do you mean by "extra charges" ?

Extra in addition to the $20/month that current tethering costs ?

For sure you're gonna pay that. I hope it's not MORE than that.

No - I mean nothing - ZERO. Not one dime. I'm already paying for the data, I shall not pay a second time.

Would a simple MAC address filter work for this? I thought a few of the MAC characters are coded to manufacturer or device. If apple knows the range for the ipads it could exclude them and without running custom software it probably isn't as easy to spoof the MAC on an ipad as it is on a desktop.

osiris, I agree with you. Many iphone users pay for tiered plans and if I pay $25/month for 2gb why can't I tether/hotspot all I want until I use my 2gb?

I completely agree. If you're going to limit my bandwidth, that's fine - but don't tell me how I can access it. What does AT&T care if I use my 5 gigs on my iPhone or on my laptop? I'm still limited.

That said, ain't no way they're going to make it free.

Next up at bat, with "yet another industry first", we have Sprint, which is scheduling a news conference for Feb 7

I figure we're gonna see monthly news conferences until we run out of cellphone carriers. Must've held a short-straw conference to see in what order the announcements come. T-Mobile must've drawn the shortest straw?

It's pretty clear if you read the press invite that it has nothing to do with the iPhone at all.
