Okay...I just ordered my first Mac, a Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz this morning. I'm just a...tad excited. According to Apple, it's shipping today and will show up tomorrow.

Basically, I need some advice on good replacements for the following PC programs I've used, freeware if at all possible. Sorry if the list is a bit long.

- Paint Shop Pro (I only do light editing of pics now and then)

- Newsgroup Reader with yEnc support

- FTP program

- Multiple-client IM program like Trillian

- Winamp-like player (I'm not too keen on using iTunes to play MP3s)

- Software firewall that will allow me to control which programs access the web, since I have a hardware firewall already

- WYSIWYG HTML editor like FrontPage

- Word processor with MS Word doc support

- Nero Burning ROM type of CD burning app (I know you can burn from within OS X, but how featured is it?)

And do I need to get spyware/adware/malware programs, too?

Thank you very much for your patience and help.

Maybe you can help me out. Whats a good pc newsgroup reader? I use unison on my mac and I have yet to find anything remotely like it in terms of usability.

I think Unison is the best one for the mac.

Other programs for you:

Win-amp type thing = Audion
Firewall- If you just want to stop programs for getting to the web, I suggest Little Snith
CD Burning - Toast
Frontpage - Maybe Golive or dreamweaver
AXP

IMHO, the best PC newsgroup reader is Forte Agent (the pay version, not the freeware). They recently released version 2.0 and it works great. Built-in support for yEnc and everything.
