In a court filing discovered today, audio equipment maker Bose is suing headphone rival Beats over noise cancellation headphone technology. Bose claims that Beats has knowingly infringed on "50 years of signficant investment in the research, development, engineering, and design" on the technology, with the Beats lineup for sale now using "36 US patents and applications" that Bose now owns or has filed for.

Of the 36 patents allegedly infringed by the company, Bose has been granted 22 of them, with 14 applications yet to be granted, some more than three years old. Bose claims to have informed Beats of the infringing activity prior to the suit filing, and the lack of adequate response forced the filing of the suit.

Bose is seeking "equitable relief" for the "continued, willful infringement" of its patents. It also seeks "an accounting for infringing acts not presented at trial and an award by the Court of additional damages for such acts" which generally means that Bose thinks that Beats is in infringement of more of its patents, and seeks redress.

Interesting...Apple buys Beats...now (after 50 years of R&D and 36 patents and disclosures submitted outstanding) Bose sues Beats. Hmmm? Wasn't worth it last year, the year before, etc. to sue Beats then?? Wait until they grow (and in Beats case get bought up) to open the lawsuit. Clever. Obvious money-grabbing attempt, but clever. ;(

@Stuke Not money-grabbing... just protecting their property in the most effective way. Beats, Apple and Bose are probably onboard for the deep-pocket Apple settlement.
Beats was never anything more that a marketing joke. Bose have decent products. Their headphone technology has brought me real comfort in coach over the past decade. Unlike Beats tech it is valuable.

Actually, the Bose headphone noise reduction is pretty much the only thing they do right.
