I've got a new Mac Pro on order custom configured with the 8800GT. I ordered it in the evening on 8 Jan. My order status still shows 13 Feb for a shipping date. Have any of you either received an 8800GT MPro yet or gotten word that your machine is complete and/or shipping? I find it a bit odd that I can ping PriceGrabber and find numerous 8800GTs in stock at various merchants and yet Apple's wait time is 3-5 weeks...

Apple never puts off the shelf GPU cards in there machines from the factory, all Apple GPU's require a special firmware to work in OS X.

If you buy an after market non-apple edition card chances are very high that it wont work in OS X but will in Windows(provided you made a dual-boot system).

If you needed the machine already you should have gotten the stock card then buy the 8800GT upgrade kit. That way you get the machine now and can sell the stock card when the 8800 arrives to recoup some of the cost of the upgrade.

Cheers

My issue is more one of patience than pressing need . I'm simply curious whether anyone has received a factory configured 8800 GT yet. I trust that Apple will configure and ship the MPros in the sequence they were ordered as video cards become available.

I wasn't considering an aftermarket card, simply checking whether this was an Apple issue or an NVidia issue. In fact, just about everyone has aftermarket cards in stock. Considering the 8800GT's widespread availability now, and the fact that Apple had 520 days to work the configuration for this latest Mac release, I'm surprised that the card is unavailable until 3-5 weeks after the product introduction.

I ordered one with an 8800 on the 8th also and I've got the same shipping date as you have. For me, the waitin' blues still carry on.

You ordered yours on Jan 23 and are quoted for Feb 13 shipping? ...hard to believe that people who ordered on day one (Jan 8) got quoted the same ship date as people who are ordering over 2 weeks later.

They wont ship until 10.5.2 is released. 10.5.1 doesn't have the 8800GT drivers.

Yep I'm still waiting too, ordered Jan 8th in the morning, and shipping date still says Feb. 13th.

If they are waiting for 10.5.2 to be released, does that mean the Mac Pro's we ordered will be pre-loaded with it? Or the instant we receive our orders, do we have to update

OS X 10.5.1 build 9B18 does not have the 8800GT drivers , but the 10.5.1 build ( 9B116 ) shipping with new Mac Pro's does. The delay is manufacturing lead time till Apple's far east contractor ( Foxconn? ) delivers the 8800GT boards in quantity.

Preload of 10.5.2 wont happen till new restore discs are pressed, after 10.5.2 is available as an update.

Keep the faith. If mine is actually finally ready for shipment as the Apple Store says, and I also ordered it on the 8th, I suspect you'll see your status change in the next 24 hours, maybe before you call it a night. Good luck!

Did it send you an email informing you it was ready for shipment?

No email yet, and I don't have a tracking number, but the status changed some time within the last 24 hours. I had been checking it multiple times per day but was getting so frustrated with the wait that I've forced myself to only check once per day. I checked just prior to 8 EST and saw the status change. I really hope they don't play with me and sit on it until 13 Feb. I'm afraid they may have been waiting to go final on the 10.5.2 update before these shipped and, as of this morning, that has still not gone final. We'll see...

Mine had a problem verifying my card, even though they successfully charged it on the 8th for the Apple Care and I have plenty of credit available. Re-entered it, hope it ships soon!
