While i'm posting today i thought i would talk about Mail.
I enjoy Mail. Good little mailing application. But one thing erks me.
The fact that you can't tell when a message is being sent. There is no progress bar.
Sure i can go t the Activity Viewer, but something should really be built-in. Isn't the status of your upload of attachments an important thing? I sent out 4 photo's yesterday and i had no idea if it had sent.
So i was forced to open up a separate box to see (which seems unnecessary). Yes, i realize i should hear a swoosh sound as well.

If i recall, i believe prior versions of Mail had a progress bar. not sure why they removed it.

When you are sending messages, the Sent mailbox changes name to Sending... and a spinning activity dial appears next to the name:

If you need more information than that, then open the monitor (personally, I just leave it open).

I asked this question ages ago and most people thought I was loony. http://forums.macnn.com/82/applicati...tivity-viewer/

Anyway, I ditched Mail.app and just use the gmail web interface now. I've found conversation view to be worth the sacrifice.

i'm not sure what version of Mail you are running, but my SENT button doesn't change to Sending... when i send a message. I also don't see the spinning wheel.

you must be using an old verison, as i remember that the old version did the things you mentioned.

upgrade and you shall share my fate.

Nope, I am using the very latest version of OS X and Mail - see my signature. It is not the button that changes, it is the Mailbox name.

A progress bar would be better. Having to keep a whole separate window open just to see what's going on is kind of silly. It's not like Finder just puts a big spinny arrow in the file transfer window and I have to open up a "Finder Activity" window to see what the arrow actually represents.

You don't have to open a separate window to see the spinning wheel.

the Send icon doesn't change for me either. I do however leave the Activity Viewer open, but I hate extra windows.

I'd still like to know how I can get the Send icon to change to Sending ...

Apple discussions has numerous threads on this: Apple - Support - Discussions - Search Discussions

It seems quite a few people experience the bug that the spinner does not appear next to the Send icon.

MailEnhancer, listed here: Hawk Wings - Plug-ins for Apple Mail includes a function to automatically show the Activity Viewer during activity.

Yes, and the spinning wheel conveys almost no information.

I'm not sure why it would be.

You mentioned Mail versions. Let's agree that the current version is 2.1.1. Now are you sure that the mailbox name doesn't change to sending and that you don't see the spinning wheel? If so, I'd suggest you do a bit of testing while the activity window is open to see if that mailbox name does or does not change.

Regardless of whether or not it changes, you can send mail, right?

Press command-0 to see the Activity Monitor. Does this address your concern?
