RAM limit on 4400/StarMax...

I understand that the max specified RAM on these machines is 160MB (i.e. 2 of 64MB and 1 of 32 MB EDO DIMM)
Is the 64MB maximum a technical limitation, or were these the largest DIMM's available when these machines were introduced?
In other words, has anyone had any success with 128MB DIMM's?

Doubt you could even find 128MB DIMMs for the 4400 (and if you did, they'd be so expensive that it would make more sense to buy a new machine).

Don't listen to Spiny Norman. It rarely makes sense to "just get a new machine." As for the 128mb DIMMs, they exuist, and I beleive OWC sells them for just $55 or so, but most reputable dealers strongly advise against using them for the Power Mac 44xx-54xx-64xx machines, so I would advise against potentially frying your motherboard...besides, what are you using your machine for that requires 128mb + of RAM?

Oh, and you can get another 3+ years out of your computer by getting the L2 G3 processor upgrade, many of which are selling for under $200 these days. This is the best possible upgrade for your computer, and several manufacturers (notably Sonnet, who are alos guaranteeing now defunct Newer Technology product's compatibility, too!) have pledged OS X compatibility for thier processor card, too. Enjoy your older machine--it's still got a lot of life left in it!

128MB sticks do not exist for the 4400. And not for $55. Jeez, the 64MB sticks go for $90-$150 depending on the vendor. I happen to own 3 of the 4400's, all with G3 upgrades and various amounts of RAM. I wasn't telling him to buy a new machine, but if he was considering adding $400 worth of RAM to this model, he'd be better off investing it in a beige G3 for which you can get 256MB sticks for not much over $60 -- a far more sensible solution if his RAM needs so dictated.

Sorry, T, but the 4400 (Tanzania) uses different RAM from that what fits in the 5400. Nonetheless, it is limited to 64M per slot, I'm pretty sure.
Macgurus.com are the experts, or check the RAMfinder at MemoryX.com . They're usually dead on.
