LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A British man was being treated for shock on Wednesday after he fell from a ladder while pruning trees, accidentally killing his wife with his chainsaw, police said.

The 56-year-old man, who has not been named, was cutting back tree branches at his home in southeast London on Monday when he tumbled backwards from the ladder.

The running chainsaw crashed down onto the neck of his wife, who was working in the garden below him.

"The woman was killed instantly, although she was not decapitated," police said in a statement. "Her husband was taken to hospital. He is still being treated for shock."

A police spokesman said the incident was being treated as a "tragic accident."
Clearly she was a cut above the rest.

Did you say that on purpose to see who'd get upset? It did seem a bit canned. Hmm.... still doesn't make it funny.

Perhaps you're right. The real world is a lot more funny than a stupid spy/action movie. AHahahAH!

That's terrible for both of them. The guy must be in an unimaginable hell right now, assuming he's even lucid.

lessons we've learned from the internet this week:

punching a shark in the gills will hurt them;

don't run away from bears, especially bears that aren't chasing you;

don't garden below someone on a ladder with a chainsaw.

That is a very tragic accident. My prayers go out to him, family, and friends.

Seriously, the non-religious people on this forum should be hoping this guy turns out ok, the rest of us should be praying.

Yes, tragic **** happens everyday, but not this tragic. But if you wanna be a dick about it, then don't hope/pray/sacrifice a bull. Sometimes a little human decency doesn't hurt.

Unfortunate? Yes. Tragic? Not really. Combine a chainsaw, gravity and an unsuspecting person underneath, and you have near certain death.To me, tragic is a a world class swimmer that drowns. Wait, that's irony....

Yes it is tragic. But what person in their right mind would garden directly under a person on a ladder using a chain saw to 'prune' a tree. Especially if it was her husband who is probably sick and tired of the bitching and such over the years.

Chain saws also shut of automatically and the chain gets braked to an immediate stop. Unless it's been tampered with of course.

I don't think all saws do. My chainsaw has an inertial chain brake that, if the blade swings up too quickly, will put a brake on the chain, though the engine stays running. However, older or cheaper saws do not have this feature, I think.

I think this thread really displays what a bunch of humorless twits inhibit this forum.

(Also, for flamebait, if something like this had happened to a public figurehead that wasn't held in high esteem here, like...oh say President Bush, everyone here would shoot their collective loads in joy.)

Agreed. People need to lighten the **** up and quit being so dramatic about amusing stories like this.

The fact that anyone finds this story "amusing" is really sad. Would you find it amusing if it was you who accidently killed your wife in this manner? Have a little empathy and compassion if it's possible.

The fact that no one in this thread has said "perfect crime" is quite intriguing.

Actually, I take it back. It isn't.

If he took his finger off of the throttle, then yes, the chain would spin down as it idled, but falling from a ladder, he probably never did that. If anything, he probably squeezed down tighter. As for the chain brake, it has to be engaged, either manually, or by the saw kicking back. And like someone else mentioned, older saws don't have chain brakes at all.

As for why the thread is locked, that should be somewhat obvious.
