LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A British man was being treated for shock on Wednesday after he fell from a ladder while pruning trees, accidentally killing his wife with his chainsaw, police said.

The 56-year-old man, who has not been named, was cutting back tree branches at his home in southeast London on Monday when he tumbled backwards from the ladder.

The running chainsaw crashed down onto the neck of his wife, who was working in the garden below him.

"The woman was killed instantly, although she was not decapitated," police said in a statement. "Her husband was taken to hospital. He is still being treated for shock."

A police spokesman said the incident was being treated as a "tragic accident."

Clearly she was a cut above the rest.

Yes it is tragic. But what person in their right mind would garden directly under a person on a ladder using a chain saw to 'prune' a tree. Especially if it was her husband who is probably sick and tired of the bitching and such over the years.

Chain saws also shut of automatically and the chain gets braked to an immediate stop. Unless it's been tampered with of course.

I don't think all saws do. My chainsaw has an inertial chain brake that, if the blade swings up too quickly, will put a brake on the chain, though the engine stays running. However, older or cheaper saws do not have this feature, I think.

If he took his finger off of the throttle, then yes, the chain would spin down as it idled, but falling from a ladder, he probably never did that. If anything, he probably squeezed down tighter. As for the chain brake, it has to be engaged, either manually, or by the saw kicking back. And like someone else mentioned, older saws don't have chain brakes at all.

As for why the thread is locked, that should be somewhat obvious.
