I was the same way. After trying the iPad at work, I instantly knew I needed one. The experience of using it was just great.

Funny thing is, here I am like 4 years later, and I barely use my iPad. I guess I go in cycles, but I think the small step up from 4" to 4.7" on my iPhone actually made my iPad Mini a lot less useful.

Around the house, I used to go like 30% iPhone / 70% iPad in my usage. Now with the iPhone 6 it's like 80% iPhone / 20% iPad Mini. (And I'm not even using a 6+.)

I wonder how much of it is just mental and the attraction to the newer shinier device... because this exact thing has happened in the past with my iPhone 5 and my iPad 2. Although at the time, I thought it was more because my kid basically stole my iPad from me. It was simply not possible to even use it when he was around. Because it would just devolve any situation into him begging to use it...

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I'm seriously considering getting a $350 model just to check it out. I'm most anxious to see what the developer network comes up with. I think there will be some great innovations.

Maybe the Apple Watch will have a similar effect, but I think it has a lot more work to do to accomplish it.
It took a lot longer with the iPad for me. I took advantage of a sensational local store-opening deal on a low-end iPad 2 to try it out, knowing that there was no way the 16GB would work for me.
It took about a year before I realized that I'd no longer be able to do my job without it.

So I went another year on that one, and when the Air 2 came out, I got the 128GB LTE version, no discussion.

Not true for me.
Bought the iPad 1 on launch day for two purposes:

* surfing internet
* watching movies while traveling (flights, hotel)

This is still 90% of my use today.

Smartwatches made by actual watch companies may be better. 2 year battery life? Hmm...

Hah. It's amazing that I didn't even think of this before. It's just a regular watch without a touchscreen or whatever, so battery life is almost like a regular watch...but it still seamlessly syncs with your phone and tracks your physical/fitness data?

That's...pretty awesome, yeah. Except I will note that working out with a big metal watch on one's arm isn't exactly ideal from a fitness perspective....but it's not like the screen-based smartwatches are fixing that problem.

Except, you're not getting a SMARTwatch.

You are getting a regular (dumb) watch with a few sensors.

Seems pretty smart to me, many people don't want a PC on their wrist, they just want something with better phone integration for fitness, GPS, etc..

That gets back to what a SmartWatch should and should not be able to do - which no one has quite figured out or agreed on as of yet.

What we do know is that it must have a teensy tiny screen that is challenging to work with and seems unlikely to effectively perform basic "work" functions, such as read emails, or basic "play" functions, such as visit websites or map my location. It must sync with a larger, more powerful phone that you likely also have to carry with you. It cannot really function as a call device without third-item ear devices or having to speak into one's wrist like an idiot.

Like I said, I hadn't thought of it before. But what if most people are not looking for a big honkin screen on their wrist? What if they're looking for the data, which is far more easily viewed on something like the cell phone which is in their purse/pocket anyway?

How "smart" are these watches? They just have sensors and depend on the phone anyway. More like smart dumb terminals.

That's.......exactly what Turtle said.

Again: are we certain we know how "smart" we want our watches to be? Is there any benefit to a watch I can use as a phone if I have to have my real phone in my pocket at the same time?

I'm still not satisfied that the SmartWatches I have seen - including the Watch - accomplish that task in a satisfactory manner.

My iPhones GPS and accelerometer sensors work while it's my pocket, so slapping a few sensors on a regular watch will definitely not make it smart(er).

Let's see what health-related sensors the Apple Watch will bring.

Correct. I entered fake information, but it asked to click a link in the confirmation email.

WTF ?

So the only way to get passed this would have been to enter my real email, I guess.

At any rate, I lost interest. I'm not even bothering to go back and look at it on my Mac.

I decided to check the desktop site just to see if this is an email harvesting scam.

The DT site has a close button.

Going off that I discovered the mobile site does get rid of the email box if you tap outside it.

I tried that several times, it didn't work.

I was able to even scroll the background page, but the overlay input box never went away.

17k for the most expensive Apple Watch....

$699 for the steel with leather band- which is what I'm getting. Wish it was available to preorder today. I guess my money will have to burn that hole a little bit longer..

I was able to do the same with scrolling the background, then hit the right spot somehow. I'm not sure what the voodoo was, and the cookie registers me as someone who doesn't want the popup now, so I can't test.

Anyone who buys a 17k Apple Watch is just throwing their money down a hole.

Hey, if you've got it to throw it, more power to you, but try and picture owning a $17,000 Rose Gold iPhone 1 right now.

If I was getting one I'd get the black 42mm Apple Watch Sport with the black polyfillastophosormoronic band or whatever it is.

I believe someone who buys this is trying to display they are capable of doing just that.

If you can only throw $500 away on a watch, you suck at throwing money away and everybody knows it. People may even begin to think you bought it for a different reason than to throw money away.

Like telling time, or something.

Not really. Kinda... I've yet to delve into all the info yet, but watching the keynote made me appreciate how convenient it would be to have messages and tweets popping up. But the battery life is a concern - though it looks easy enough to charge as needed.

The watch market does not work like the cellphone market.

Mobile phones have been disposable commodities — tools — since Day One.

AFAIK, watches never were — well, until the Swatch came along and enabled the throwaway fashion-fad watch market that grew into things like the hideous pink G-Shocks that everybody was wearing for a while.

I have no idea how the smartwatch market will work (it isn't at all, at the moment), but Apple is obviously betting on it working like the watch market, and not like the disposable commodity technology market.

Agreed. Definitely someone with more money than sense. WTF would anyone their right mind want a $17K 18 karat gold watch with a synthetic rubber band? Even a leather band? That's like wearing a $10K Italian designer suit with a pair of sneakers!

Outside of the fitness oriented features it doesn't do a lot that can't be done with an iPhone. And since it has to be tethered to an iPhone anyway it's a very expensive proposition for what is essentially duplicate functionality. Sure there's the convenience of not having to take the iPhone out of your pocket. But IMO to justify the price tag the watch would need to be worn all day. And for that it would need to be something that you can wear with just about anything. Casual, dressy, formal, etc. So for me personally the only one that covers all those bases that I find aesthetically pleasing is the 42 mm Stainless Steel Apple Watch with the Link Bracelet:

And that will set you back a $1000! When I compare the cost of this watch to the $1300 it would cost me for the new 12-inch Macbook ... suffice it to say that I don't see myself purchasing an Apple Watch anytime soon.

As far as watches go, $1000 for it is reasonable actually. But I'm in the same boat as you are (although I prefer the black one which costs $100 more), sadly, I won't be able to afford one. I hope Apple takes the longer life cycles into account when Apple decided to enter from the fashion angle.

Seriously? I've been known to splurge on certain things but I guess watches aren't one of them. I have a few Kenneth Cole watches. A couple that are stainless steel and one leather. Very stylish. Never spent more than $200. I don't recall offhand if they have a sapphire crystal display or not. In any event, I hardly ever wear any of them anymore because I can easily see what time it is with my iPhone. When I do it's usually just as an adornment for a suit I'm rocking. Apple is basically charging $450 for a stainless steel band. I could blow the money on it if I had nothing better to do ... but it's just not that serious for me.

I watched most of the keynote and I'm still not getting an Apple Watch. The main reason is battery life; I'm not going to charge yet another device, especially one that has to be charged as frequently as the Apple Watch or any other smart watch for that matter. I'm quite happy with my dumb Suunto watch.

Some of the most expensive watches in the world have leather straps, and I'm pretty sure no one can buy a gold Apple Watch with the rubber strap.

My wife Kim wants an Edition Watch, she's a crazed Apple fangirl, so we'll probably get one. I''ll probably get the dark steel w/ black leather.

The Apple Watch is a luxury item, and should be seen in that content. I want a black steel Apple Watch the same way I want a BMW 5-series. And in that category, spending $450 for a steel band isn't unusual or necessarily expensive. It's kinda sad that Apple hasn't made a few more strides making luxury a tad more accessible, but c'est la vie.

Seeing as that combination is available on the Apple website...in rosé/white and gold/black...

I think it's odd they made the Apple Watch companion app a "permanent" app on the new iOS update. I feel like this should have been a free downloadable app from the app store.

All the first party apps are permanent.Or at least most of them. Everyone has a garbage folder for the ones they don't use.

Most, yes. But this one goes in the category of Remote, Garage band, trailers, pages, numbers, keynote, Find My iPhone, iMovie, iTunes U - all downloadable and all of them you are able to delete.
