We all know Apple cannot win against Microsoft. How long before Apple ceases to exist as Apple? By "survive," I mean as it is now to the existing to its inevitable demise; whether it's Chapter 11, a merger, a buyout or the end of the world itself.

You'd be surprised how many pc d1cks call apple "mac". As in: Mac sucks dude! or Didn't Mac go out of business?

They actually think the company is named "Mac"!

What a bunch of lame-o's.

the annoying reverse of this is calling all of apples products apples, not a mac. When was the last time they sold an apple? 1983?

or the people who seem to think it's a acronym and call it a MAC. God that pisses me off!

I am lookming to riding with my grandchildren up a Apple created space elevator. We will step in and it will "just work".

Now, an M$ run space elevator will work something like this:

"Welcome to the Microsoft Space Elevator Enviroment! I detect two passengers. Please insert Transportation Authorization Card now. By doing now, you agree to the End Rider Agreement on the screen behind you..."

"But that screen 2 inches by two 2 inches and there are fifty pages of text!"

"Do you want to ride or not? Press 'agree' now..."

I think someone said it earlier didn't Apple die 25 years ago> sheesh. Let's end these threads. Apple is not going anywhere anytime soon. And if M$ keeps shooting themselves in the foot with the liscensing you might see a resurgence of Apple. A new Golden Age of sorts. But who knows. Only thing I know is Apple is NOT going anywhere anytime soon. As long as it continues to innovate it will never die. If it wasn't for Apple we'd still be using Parallel Ports and ADB As opposed to USB and Firewire. Apple Made them popular and everyone else jumped on board.

The old printer port was parallel, IIRC.

Nope, it was an RS-422 serial port. The first Mac (and Mac 512) had a 9-pin DIN port, but was still serial.

I can't stand it when people get this confused. What is so difficult about a company called 'Apple' that makes a computer called a 'Mac.' Do people refer to Microsoft as Windows or PowerPoint? I mean, if the company is called Mac, and they make Macs, how retarded is that? Instead of an Apple Macintosh it would be a 'Mac Mac.' Or do they think they make Apples and are called Macs? So the Mac Apple? I guess at one time they made Apples. Oh well, just have to live with it...

I was a Windows user for 10 years. And got in the end so pissed off windows and .. losing 1-2 days a month for formatting and isntalling and making it not to crash that i wanted ... darwin. ok, i wanted a mac but had no money. so i formatted the old pc laptop once more and installed redhat there - and now that works well.

then when i had money i bought the mac

now a WEIRD aspect on macs ... i feel HAPPIER since i switched (to linux.. and then to mac) than i EVER did with windows. maybe i enjoyed my 286 back in the end of the 1980s as much ... but i was a kid then

I think pretty soon, Apple is going to fall. But there still will be a company called Apple which basically distributes an x86 version of Mac OS X and iApps.

I agree. After that, I give them about 5 years until Microsoft kills them like they did Netscape with free bundled software.

Apple posts a loss, ships less Macs than last year and claims that "the economy" won't get better for the foreseeable future. How convenient.

Obviously, the switch campaign is having the opposite effect.

Oh, and in related news, AMD released SPEC scores for its Hammer processor showing over a 20% speed advantage over the PPC970. Hammer will arrive earlier than the PPC970 and will likely be cheaper.

At least they aren't blaming poor sales on Quark like they did last quarter.

Well.

Another loss.

That ain't good, but it will take more to bring Apple to it's knees.

We'll see what happens next quarter. I have a good feeling about it.

Well, for this fiscal year Apple posted a profit where it didn't in fiscal ending 9/2001.

As for the switch campaign, your assertion has no basis in logic--show causation.

And the Hammer's speed announcement really shook-up Wall Street, AMD's stock dropped .71 to 3.49.

And with that, I'm off to read Three Billy Goats Gruff to my nephew, and funny, there's a troll in that, too.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

On a side note, I think Apple will merge with another company within 50-100 years... IBM/Sun/Apple/Sony/Disny/Palm/RedHat or something...

Within the next five years, I see one of the following two situations evolving. With the economy set to turn around, either:

1) Steve / Apple will introduce another revolutionary product targeted at the consumer market, buying out another five years of life-support.

2) If Apple fails to recover during the economic rise, a successful silicon valley company will buy Apple out, that is buy out the hardware and the software, thus ending the Apple revolution. Rather the company will simply be spun off of a larger outfit.

Apple Retails will close, or become part of this larger corporation.
Let's show 'em why Macworld 2003 won't be like Macworld 2002.

i think the more appropriate question here would be. "how long will Gateway survive" not to mention AMD.

Oh, and in related news, AMD released SPEC scores for its Hammer processor showing over a 20% speed advantage over the PPC970. Hammer will arrive earlier than the PPC970 and will likely be cheaper.
AMD is dying. Unless they hook up with a computer company that only puts AMD's in their computers, they will suffer they same fate that 3dfx did. tis a shame.

Hmmm, maybe AMD and Gateway should get together...

AMD was dying before the introduction of the athlon. The latest iteration of the K6 was a performance disappointment, but it was cheaper than the p3. Today, the thoroughbred is a performance disappointment, but is cheaper than the P4. AMD became a legit comptetitor in the consumer space with the athlon. They have a chance to become a competitor in the mid-range server space with the hammer. Their success(as a cpu manufacturer) is largely dependent on the success of hammer.

This is a complicated question....one I tried to address with my long posts in 'The stock market is fractal 1'.

To sum up I believe we are in a deflationary depression which will leave america with 25% unemployment in a few years. I am very curious as to how Apple will survive. I voted that Apple will survive for 50-100 years. If they survive the immediate depression then they will probably survive that long but the question is how. Apple is in a strong position going into the depression with a lot of cash on hand. They have hardly made any job cuts yet so they will probably wittle themselves down to around 1000-2000 employees. But what products will they offer? If we are in the beginning of a depression then computers will only be bought second hand on ebay. No one will have cash to upgrade because they will have lost so much on the stock market and be out of work. So how do you compete against ebay? I think that someone has to do some research and see how radio corporations and car makers fared during the 30's and how they made it through. Radio stocks were the dot coms of the day.
