I ask if someone can play HD trailers from Apple at 1080p in the G4 with a constant bitrate. Surely this must be a highend G4 like Dual MDD, or maybe a 2ghz upgraded? or the G5 is a must have?

Thx.

The poblem is the H.264 codec, not the fact that it's HD video. And the G5 has the FSB needeed for H.264.

Dual G5 is the only thing to make it a near certainty with downloads from the HD gallery.

If you can wait the extra couple of minutes, you could convert the download using the Apple Intermediate Codec and should play back OK on a dual G4 - I've played back 720p examples on a 1GHz G4 this way.

Where can I get the Apple Intermediate Codec 1.0? I only found the 1.01 update.

Thx.

I think you can get it through Software Update.

My single G5 plays 'em fine.

I think it's included with some apps, like iMovie and FCP. Is it available free of charge as well?

It installs itself when you install iLife '05, not sure if it's available elsewhere.

The update is largely irrelevant to whether the codec is installed or not. If you installed iMovie HD then AIC would have installed itself into /Library/Quicktime and you just select "Apple Intermediate Codec" in the Video Settings when exporting as Quicktime.
