Alas, the only way to change the screen from low-resolution 640x480 to a more useful 1024x768 was to run a program called Xconfigurer from the command prompt. Or I could simply reinstall the OS, which seemed like the easier way out.

At least we are well better off than Win XP, which isn't that bad. Yet, everybody VOTE now. Linux is not better than OS X and the world has to know this.

My vote's in. Of course Linux is winning though. The whole article is about Linux and therefore Linux users are more likely to read and vote. If it was an OS X article I imagine much fewer Linux users would read it and OS X would win a similar vote. Of course I'm really just stating the obvious here and we all (well most of us) know what the best OS is - that's why we use it.

From what I remember when I was using KDE on Mandrake there was a GUI based control panel type thing that let you change resolution and colour depth, among other things. Maybe it was a Mandrake addition and that's why it isn't in his version, can't remember.

Setting up Linux isn't flawless for everyone. He probably has a problem with his XFree86 configuration.

Linux is ready for everyone, XFree86 isn't. It is just not user friendly enough for the rest of us. And problems are far more frequent than say Aqua or Mac OS 9's window manager (whatever it is).
In vino veritas.

not that bad, but to say that you couldn't recomend Linux over OS X is a little out there... what about people that only have $300 (granted, you are going to get a crap system... but if you just want to play around with a quality server OS... you could save a little money...)

Currently:

Windows XP: 980 (37%)

Mac OS X: 713 (27%)

Some flavor of Linux: 937 (36%)

Not bad, really ... I'd be happy with 27% market share. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

You're going to have to expect Mac OS X to lag at ZDNet...it's a circle jerk party for Windoze users. Go to there "Platforms" section...you see OS X? Thought not...

Well, I did my part:

Vote... DHCP Release... DHCP Renew... Vote... etc... Repeat x 10

Anyone else with a cable modem or otherwise easily refreshable IP address should do their part too.

Exactly, these polls are so jacked up they're worthless. Anybody remember MS having its employees manipulate stuff like this? And do you think that there are no linux boards out there telling their readers to do the same thing? It's just a war of who can mobilize troops faster, not actual usability.
With that said, I'm going to go vote. </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">Remember what the man said, "Vote early and vote often." <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Ah... gotta love these online polls. It's a simple formula: zealots start stressing about who's going to win the meaningless race and start rallying to try to rock the vote. In fact you see stuff like this:
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">Originally posted by Mithras:

Quite a number of ad impressions, I'm sure.

i'm sure we all know why Mac OS X is winning... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> I hope you've been doing your "bit"

Its amazing how fast Mac OS X's total is going up, i'm suprised that they haven't blocked 'certain' IP addresses yet.

ahhahahahah good work chaps!!

I went to bed depressed (i'm in the UK) to see the XP lead and woke up to check our doom and saw us way out in front!!

Fantastic teamwork!

Don't feel guilty, I was watching the voting minute by minute and saw the XP votes piling up at an unreasonable rate so those XP losers were on a similar mission to our own I feel...

BRING ON THE NEXT VOTE! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

They eventually post the 'real' results - so your efforts are in vain.

Votes are processed and only one unique IP per vote is counted in the final result.

I'm gonna guess that OSX will end up with fewer than 100 'real' votes.

good time waster, tho.

Not that it isn't still a waste of time, of course...
