I can't quite make up my mind which of these to go for, the versatility of a laptop is nice, although not needed at present (maybe future proofs the machine though) The MacMini has more built in USB ports as standard (have heard that external USB hubs can be problematic with iTouch/iPhones, is this correct?) and the Macmini has a FW800 port which again I don't need but does future proof the machine more. Also the MacMini is cheaper AND has a faster memory (and thus video memory or the built in Gfx) this is what I really want to know, whether this affects the (at least the video/Core Image) performance at all, will OpenCL performance be affected?
I think on PC's at least, when DDR3 1066Mhz came out, the technically higher speed was offset by the lower latency of DDR2 800Mhz, is/was this (still?) the case? Any info on this is much appreciated.

They're about the same. No meaningful differences.

Agreed.

FYI, I've had no trouble with any USB hub I've bought in the past few years.
