Great way to show your respect for a man - put up a statue of him where it's certain to be completely covered in bird ****...

Why? What connection has he got to the place? I suspect this is probably less about him being a key figure in the ending of apartheid and an inspirational leader, and more about having a memorial to the apartheid issue, one of the main pillars of the liberal protest movement. In Edinburgh's Festival Square (a bland modern wasteland in the city centre) there's a statue of a south african woman and child outside her squatter camp shack for similar reasons.

The problem with Trafalgar Square is it has an empty plinth and therefore attracts millions of mad suggestions as to what should be put there. Surely just getting rid of the plinth would be easier.

Well it's that as well. But those campaigning for it point to the fact that Trafalgar Square is where the South African High Commission is located. It was once the site of many anti-apartheid protests, so that's the symbolism.
