Hi there
I currently have a MP 2.66, 2gb ram.... and I am having many issues with it

they are:
- when internet cuts out while msn is running -- it leads to a kernel panic
- at times word, powerpoint, excel, limewire do not open just jump once on the dock and thats it
- withing one day of use the MP is dead slow i can barly open any applications
- Have to restart everyday

- it takes 10+ seconds to open dashboard

Please help!!!!

Pop in the install cd and run verify disk, then repair permissions. Is the ram from apple? How is the ram configured (ie 2x1gb, 4x512)?
Randy

Edit: Do a backup now because it could be the disk is heading south.

the ram is from apple (4x512 )

in order to:
run the verify disk-- i just put my applecare CD into the cd drive and restart holding D?
or would i just use Drive Genius and repair all 3 HDs?

could someone guide me through this as this will be my first time doing this, and i am farily new to Macs
in addition to this i do not want to loose any of my work (173+ 98+133 gigs worth of stuff)

i know this will seem like alot of work but please

Thank you

Before you do anything, BACKUP your files to another drive. Then start up from the cd holding D, after you select english, goto the top menu and select disk utility. When that fires up, select your hd and press the verify disk toward the bottom right side. If bad, try to repair. If that comes up good, then select repair permissions toward to bottom left side. Once completed, restart from the hd. Watch and see if there were alot of permissions being repaired.

Use the install disc.

For the g4 problem, you need to raise the ram up. 512 isn't enough.

They will tell him to reset the PRAM and if that doesn't work to pop in the disk and run disk utility as well. As long as the disk utility doesn't work or tells him his HDD is going south their is no real need to call

step 1) Delete MSN
step 2) Delete all the MSN files, including startup files
step 3) reboot
step 4) No more kernel panics ever.

Enjoy.

however its not only msn that has the problems.
some apps such as microsoft word, powerpoint, excel and other do not open.
ive tried to reinstall the msn but since then it hasnt had a kernel panic but still runs very slow

today i am most likely going to get 2x500gb externals and back up all of my work.
then i will run the installer holding D
and if all fails
i will just go to apple and hope for the best

How do i back up everything on these external drives?
RAID? or what other way can i do so?

Understand that once you boot from the CD you are not going to run the installer. You will look for a menu labled utilities and look for disk utility. Run that as bearcatrp suggested.

Actually it is important to call 1-800-SOS-APPL because that way the issue is documented in the event that it ends up a recurring problem. But most important, like bearcatrp said twice: backup.

Did you ever think LimeWire might screw things up a little bit? See how your Mac works without LimeWire on it.

To browse P2P networks and chat to your mates respectively?

But yeah.. perhaps use Cabos (not such a memory hog, no ware attached to it) and Adium (generally prefered by most - see what you think.)

I was speaking with a guy at Apple not long ago and he was discussing that Limewire, ethical
reasons aside, was one of the worst things you can do to a Mac because it apparently puts
random bursts of "crap" on your hard drive at the beginning and ending of files and sometimes
it overwrites system files because according to this guy "whoever wrote it just didn't have a clue
about how the Mac OS file conventions".

Use bittorrent if you want that kind of thing.

Assuming you haven't already done this...

To backup to the external hard drives, the easiest option is to plug the external hard drive into the USB or firewire slot, boot from your original install disks (I hold "C" while booting to boot from the CD/DVD drive, maybe "D" is for DVD if you have multiple drives?), select the language (optional), look through the menus and select "Run Disk Utility," then be use disk utility to create an image of each volume (one at a time).

I just wrote more procedures for this in this posting:

See my other posting in this thread about cloning your hard drive. Also be sure to read the other thread that I mentioned so that you know how to use the disk image that you make!

It is also a good idea to have a double backup of the most important files. Burn a CD or DVD or put a copy on a device that is separate from your main disk image. I have accidentally deleted backup files in the process of recovery (not disk images, but a homemade backup process), but I had other backups, so I was fine.
