Is it true that turning a clock backwards is "bad for the clock"?

I always heard the opposite. That forward was bad for them.

I had a cuckoo clock once that would lose track of the number of times it was supposed to cuckoo if you turned the clock backwards. Come to think of it, it had problems when you moved it forwards too and didn't let it cuckoo appropriately for each hour it was advanced! :-)
Other clocks seem to work fine, especially the digital ones... (Duh!)

Old pendulum clocks are only supposed to go forward. Modern quartz clocks can go any direction.

It depends on the clock. Read the instructions on how to change the time without damaging it.

It's true for some mechanical clocks. If you have an instruction manual it's best to consult that. If not, then you may need to consult a clock maker. Of course, you could also just turn the hands forward to be on the safe side.

Most modern clocks without bells, whistles, chimes, cucoos, etc. don't care at all whether you move the hands in either direction. But as Millennium points out, having the instruction manual for a fancy clock is kind of important; changing the time setting incorrectly could screw up the mechanism that operates the bells, whistles, etc.

Don't turn your clock forward or back - turn it sideways!
