Seriously, are you just shooting at anything that moves, even if it is within a few feet of your own house?

Oh right, this is the only incident of this sort of thing happening.

Another question. How does a person with poor eyesight get a hunting licence and a gun?

He had the gun and licence all his life, probably got it when he was 21.

It said that neither knew the other was out there... and since its near the house (although I guess "within earshot" can still be pretty far depending on where they're situated) I'm willing to bet that they each just grabed a gun and left - so no bright orange vests or anything.

Sad.

So if I am walking around in the woods with or without a gun the only way I can tell man from deer is by an orange vest?

I agree. Why shoot at things that move if you can not see it properly?

That is a very sad story. My prayers go out to the McKenna family and friends.

So what you are saying is that he is an idiot for shooting at something near his house even though he had poor eyesight?

Give it a rest already. Two people died in a tragic accident. Is there really a need to keep going on about it how they might or might not be 'idiots'?

****'s sake.

As my dad and I were discussing, if you live in a hunting area and are out without bright orange on, you are asking for an accident. It doesn't matter if you are hunting or not. If it's hunting season, wear orange. I would never shoot without seeing clearly what it was, but I would never trust others to do the same. Some people are just stupid. If you are just shooting at something that moves you don't know where you're going to hit it. How do you aim for a kill if you can't even verify what it is?

I think it's unbelievable that not only did the guy shoot and kill his son, but died of a heart attack himself. That is very messed up. Sad, and messed up.

Sorry but poor eyesight should ban you from hunting. Hunting is not a necessary way to get food and you should give it up (or be forced to give it up) once you are incapable of doing it safely.

Well... if you're going to be running around a known hunting ground... I would say you'd better wear your BRIGHT ORANGE vest. Otherwise, if they see movement, they may shoot. I'm not a hunter, so I don't know if you have to have positive ID prior to shooting.

They teach you to always make a positive ID when you go through gun training, but I don't know the law either. Anyone over a certain age doesn't have to go through training, though. It might be 18 or 21, I'm not sure.

I would like to think our law is written to prohibit dumb people from shooting at anything that moves but who knows.

It sad, but going on about it may serve as a lesson to other idiots reading this. If we let it go, idiots might think shooting at things you can't see is ok if you have poor eyesight.

I hear ya... but then again, you would think we would have a way to prevent them from getting a firearm in the first place.... but I guess that would a discussion for the political lounge.

No, he's saying it's ok to shoot people if you have poor eyesight and you think you are shooting deer.

Sorry but I cannot understand how if you are looking through a sight of a gun how ANY part of a human can look like a deer. I mean a human does not crawl around in the bush on all fours nibbling on branches. If anything they will stomp through on 2 legs carrying a 6 pack.

Bad eyesight or not these hunters that shoot other people by mistake must just see something move, rase the gun and shoot. Total idiots.

How about this one: about 5 or 6 years ago, on the opening day of the hunting season here in wonderful northern New Jersey, a deer hunter was shot accidentally by another (first time) hunter. The guy who got shot was wearing blaze orange clothes and was standing in his tree stand! The lad that did the shooting was horrified at what he'd done and relieved to learn that the wounds he inflicted on the other hunter were not life-threatening. He said, "I was so keyed up to be out on opening day that when I saw something that didn't look like part of the natural scenery I simply shot at it." (words to that effect). The second he saw something out of place, he assumed it was his target, not waiting even to identify it. The excitement took over and he started shooting.

Not even in New Jersey do we have orange, tree-climbing deer. We have a lot of stuff, but not those.

Doesn't everyone feel better knowing that this man legally owns a gun.

This act was beyond stupid, but believe me, hunters don't have a monopoly on stupid. It's spread around equally.

I was going to say spymac members have the monopoly, they just aren't old enough to own a gun.
