Hey all.

I just purchased a PowerComputing-PowerCurve 601/120MHz system off of eBay for $30 + $25 shipping. It includes the Keyboard, Mouse, a 14" Apple Monitor, and as far as I know, the machine itself is the stock cofiguration.

Did I get a good deal?

The system should be arriving sometime next week. I am debating about what to do with it once it arrives. From what I have read, it is a very expandable machine, and is upgradeable to a G3 and 512MB of RAM. I thought about running Linux on it, but I dont have a PPC version in my posession yet. What version would you all recommend... Debian?

Or I could spend $300 or so to put some upgrades in it. The problem is, I don't really need another Mac OS machine, maintaining my iBook and my 5 other 68k Macs keeps me busy, which is why I am considdering Linux.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like a decent deal. Great candidate for Linux, since you apparently have more Mac OS configurations than you could possibly use!

I am rather partial to Yellow Dog Linux, but Mandrake and Debian also make fine PPC distributions. YDL 2.2 just came out, so everything is well-updated compared to the latest versions of Mandrake PPC (8.0) and Debian (?).

Best of luck!

Oh yeah, you did! For starters, shipping on a 14" monitor alone is usually about $25. The CPU box alone should have fetched close to $40.

Sonnet Crescendo PCI G3 (but not G4) cards work in PowerCurve. One at 300MHz can be found on eBay for about $100, or you can buy a new 450 or 500 MHz card for $150 and $200 from Sonnet.

Tell ya what, if you don't like it, I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands.

I had *considered* selling it originally, but I dont know...

I'll have to wait until it gets here. The guy who I bought it from forgot to put the apartment number on the package, so it has been sitting somewhere here in Tulsa since Monday. UPS sent me a postcard to inform me that they had the package, which in and of itself was a moronic thing to do since they STILL didnt know my apartment number. Luckily my mail man recognized my last name and popped the post card in my box. I called UPS and they told me that if I hadnt called them tonight, they would have shipped the package back to the sender tomorrow morning...
