macaddict had a tip on this a while back....set up a new imap account with the following settings:

ACCOUNT INFORMATION

incoming mail server: imap.aol.com
outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com:youremailaddress

click on server settings, fill in 587 for server port
DO NOT check "Use Secure Sockets Layer"
For Authentication, choose password, and enter your aol user name and password

under ADVANCED, leave the IMAP prefix blank, do not check automatically synchronize changed mailboxes, fill in port 143, and choose "password" for authentication as well

If you have any problems, let me know and i will post a screenshot of my AOL settings that have been working for me....in case I missed something here

Hey Jay, I'm receiving incoming emails but I when I try to send an email it comes back saying that the port could not be connected to at 25. Could the network admin be screwing things up? Even when I changed the port to 587 it still says that it can't connect.

I'm not sure Marti....I only knew what I knew from an old Macaddict tip. The setup I have described above works for me, both sending and receiving. Maybe you have a firewall issue??

Could you possibly post a picture? it's odd that I can receive email but I can't send it out. It could be a network thing though.

-thanks

Marti, I just tried to set it up the same way and I ran into the same proble you described. I noticed, going back into the outgoing server settings that the server was named smtp.aol.com:username:username. I'd originally named the server smtp.aol.com:username to match what I saw in the setup that was posted in this forum. It turns out that mail automatically appends ":username" to it when you fill in the username box. I renamed the server to just "smtp.aol.com" and it works fine now.
